(서울=연합뉴스) 권혜진 현혜란 기자 = 인도양 남부 모리셔스 해역에 좌초돼 기름 유출 피해를 일으킨 일본 선박이 결국 두 동강 났다고 CNN 등이 전했다.

모리셔스 국가위기관리위원회는 15일(현지시간) 성명을 내고 이날 오후 4시 30분께 선제 앞부분이 분리됐다고 밝혔다.

그린피스 아프리카지부 탈 해리스 조정관은 모리셔스 당국이 사고 지역을 '금지 구역'으로 설정하고 자원봉사자들에게 활동중단을 요청했다고 설명했다.

드론 영상을 확인한 환경 전문가 수닐 코르와카싱은 "아침부터 해안가를 따라 경비가 강화됐다"며 "완전한 비상사태"라고 분위기를 전했다.

앞서 프라빈드 주그노트 모리셔스 총리는 환경비상사태를 선포했고, 케이비 라마노 환경부 장관은 "환경 위기에 처했다"고 말했다.

일본 3대 해운사인 쇼센미쓰이(商船三井)의 화물선 '와카시오호'는 지난달 25일 중국에서 브라질로 향하던 중 모리셔스 남동쪽 산호초 바다에서 좌초했다.

이 화물선에선 사고 이후 약 1천t의 원유가 새어 나오며 천혜의 자연환경을 자랑하는 모리셔스 바다를 오염시켰다.

일본 해운사 측은 지난 13일 사고 선박에 남아있던 원유 3천t을 제거하는 작업을 거의 다 끝냈다고 밝혔으나 이날 현재 얼마나 남아있는지는 확실치 않다.

모리셔스 안팎에선 정부의 늑장 대응을 비판하는 목소리가 높다. 환경 전문가들은 피해 복원에 수십 년이 걸릴 것으로 보고 있다.

모리셔스 출신의 환경운동가 알렉스 렁페르나는 영국 일간 가디언에 기고한 글에서 "지구상에서 내가 아는 가장 아름다운 곳이 황폐해지고 있다"며 통탄했다.

그는 이번 기름유출 사고가 생태학적으로 중요한 지역을 파괴했을 뿐만 아니라 물고기, 새, 산호에 의존해 살아가는 지역사회를 독살한 셈이라고 지적했다.

모리셔스는 굉장히 아름다운 해양생태계의 본고장으로 생태보호지역인 토종 새와 동식물이 사는 작은 산호섬 등을 보유하고 있다.

모리셔스에 있어서 산호 생태계는 국내총생산(GDP)의 20%를 차지하는 관광업을 꾸려나가는 데 있어서 없어서는 안 될 중요한 자원으로 여겨진다.
