'아직은 청춘'…70대 포르투갈 대통령, 물에 빠진 여성 구해

(런던=연합뉴스) 박대한 특파원 = 70대에 접어든 마르셀루 헤벨루 데 수자(71) 포르투갈 대통령이 휴가지에서 물에 빠진 여성을 구조해 화제가 되고 있다.

17일(현지시간) 코헤이우 다 마나(Correio da Manha), 포르투갈 레지던트 등 현지언론에 따르면 헤벨루 데 수자 대통령은 지난 14일부터 공식 휴가에 들어갔다.

휴가 첫날 포르투갈 남부 알가르브의 한 해안가에서 아침 수영에 나선 대통령은 카약에 타고 있던 여성 2명이 물에 빠진 광경을 목격했다.

이에 바닷물을 헤엄쳐 여성들에게 다가간 헤벨루 데 수자 대통령은 다른 사람 및 제트 스키를 타고 도착한 이와 함께 여성들을 구조했다.

여성들은 이웃 해변에서 카약을 타다가 해류에 의해 떠밀려왔고, 힘이 빠진 상태에서 카약이 뒤집어지는 바람에 위험에 처했다.

헤벨루 데 수자 대통령은 구조 작업 후 기자들과 만난 자리에서 "그들은 (카약이) 뒤집혀서 물을 먹었다"면서 "조류가 너무 세 그들이 제대로 헤엄을 치지 못했다"고 전했다.

그러면서 "그들이 상당히 겁을 먹었다"고 덧붙였다.

코헤이우 다 마나는 "마르셀루 헤벨루 데 수자는 결코 쉬지 않는다"면서 "휴가 중에도 그에게 다가가는 사람들에게 친절히 말을 걸어주고 사진을 함께 찍는가 하면 위험에 처한 누구든 도울 준비가 돼 있는 것을 보여줬다"고 칭찬했다.

헤벨루 데 수자 대통령은 이번 주 중반 리스본으로 돌아올 예정이며, 휴가의 상당 부분을 연설 등을 준비하면서 보낼 것으로 전해졌다.
