터키, 성소피아 이슬람 사원 전환 비난한 EU 규탄…"주권 문제"

터키 외무, '사원 전환 재검토' 요구 일축…러시아도 터키 비난

(모스크바=연합뉴스) 유철종 특파원 = 터키 외무부가 14일(현지시간) 자국 내 유네스코 세계유산인 성소피아 박물관의 모스크(이슬람 사원) 전환을 비난한 유럽연합(EU)을 다시 규탄하고 나섰다.

AP 통신에 따르면 메블뤼트 차우쇼을루 터키 외무장관은 이날 기자회견에서 EU의 비판에 대한 논평을 요청받고 "우리는 '비난'이란 단어를 배격한다"면서 "이는 터키의 주권에 관한 문제다"라고 반박했다.

차우쇼을루는 EU 회원국인 스페인에서도 사원으로 전환된 여러 곳의 모스크가 있다고 주장했다.

앞서 EU 외무장관들은 전날 수개월 만에 처음으로 대면 회담을 열고 성소피아의 모스크 전환을 비난한다고 밝혔다.

호세프 보렐 EU 외교·안보정책 고위대표는 "터키 당국이 이 결정(사원 전환 결정)을 긴급하게 재검토하고 번복하도록 요구하는 데 대한 광범위한 지지가 있었다"고 전했다.

터키 최고행정법원은 앞서 지난 10일 성소피아의 지위를 박물관으로 정한 1934년 내각회의 결정을 취소하는 판결을 내렸다.

그 직후 에르도안 대통령은 성소피아를 터키 종교청인 '디야네트'가 관리하고 이슬람 신자의 신앙을 위한 공간으로 재개장하라는 행정명령에 서명했다.

터키 종교청은 오는 24일부터 성소피아 사원에서 예배를 시작할 예정인 것으로 알려졌다.

사원을 관람하려는 관광객들은 하루 다섯차례 진행될 예배에 방해가 되지 않도록 정해진 시간에 출입이 허용될 것으로 전해졌다.

터키의 결정에 미국을 비롯한 서방국가와 유럽연합(EU), 기독교 정교회 국가인 그리스, 국민의 다수가 정교회 신자인 러시아 등이 모두 비판의 목소리를 높였다.

러시아 외무부는 레제프 타이이프 에르도안 터키 대통령이 전날 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령에게 전화를 걸어 성소피아 박물관의 이슬람 사원 전환 결정에 양해를 구하고, 러시아 관광객들의 사원 출입을 허용하겠다고 약속했음에도 대변인 명의의 논평을 통해 거듭 비판적 입장을 밝혔다.

외무부는 논평에서 "성소피아 박물관을 이슬람 사원으로 전환하고 그곳에서 무슬림 예배를 재개키로 한 터키 지도부의 결정을 유감스럽게 받아들인다"고 지적했다.

이어 "얼마 전까지 박물관 지위를 갖고 전 세계 기독교계의 성지이자 세계 문화와 유라시아 문명의 유산이던 성소피아의 운영이 유네스코(UNESCO·유엔교육과학문화기구) 세계유산 지위에 전적으로 부합하게 되길 기대한다"고 주문했다.
