EU-인도 화상 정상회의…무역관계 강화 합의

(브뤼셀=연합뉴스) 김정은 특파원 = 유럽연합(EU)과 인도 정상이 15일(현지시간) 양측의 무역 관계를 발전시키는 데 합의했다.

AFP 통신 등에 따르면 샤를 미셸 EU 정상회의 상임의장, 우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 EU 집행위원장, 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리는 이날 화상 정상회담에서 이같이 뜻을 모으고 무역, 투자 합의 진전을 위한 장관급 대화를 진행하기로 했다.

EU와 인도의 교역 규모는 지난해에만 약 1천150억 달러(약 138조원)에 달했지만, 양측의 무역 협정 논의는 진전이 더딘 상태다.

그러나 전문가들은 중국이 더 공세적으로 나오고 세계 경기 침체 우려가 계속되면서 양측은 상호이익에 대해 점점 더 인식하고 있다고 보고 있다.

폰데어라이엔 집행위원장은 회담 뒤 "EU는 인도의 최대 무역 파트너이고, 최대의 투자자"라면서 "하지만 우리의 전체적인 무역, 투자 관계는 최대 잠재력에 이르지 않았다"라고 말했다.

양측은 이날 회담 뒤 민주주의, 자유, 법치, 인권 존중이라는 공동의 원칙과 가치를 기반으로 전략적 협력관계를 강화하기로 했다는 내용 등을 담은 공동 성명을 발표했다.
