미 '연방 사형' 일주일에 세 번 집행…어린이 살해 마약상

6세·10세 어린이 포함 5명 잔인하게 살해

'보수층 결집' 정치적 목적 해석도

(서울=연합뉴스) 이재영 기자 = 미국에서 6세와 10세 어린이를 포함해 다섯 명을 살해한 남성이 17일(현지시간) 사형됐다.

지난 14일 연방정부 차원의 사형집행이 17년 만에 재개된 뒤 일주일 사이 세 번째 열린 사형 집행이다.

AP통신 등에 따르면 인디애나주 테러호트 연방교도소에 수감 중이던 사형수 더스틴 혼켄이 이날 약물주입 방식으로 사형됐다.

마약상이었던 혼켄은 1993년 여자친구와 함께 아이오와주 메이슨시티에서 자신의 마약범죄 수사에 협조하고 차후 법원에서 자신에게 불리한 증언을 할 것으로 보였던 동료 마약상과 그의 여자친구, 그리고 여자친구의 두 딸을 살해했다.

당시 그는 10살과 6살밖에 안 된 동료 마약상 여자친구 딸들의 뒤통수에 총을 쏴 총살형 하듯이 죽였다.

이후 수사 과정에서 혼켄이 다른 마약판매 공범을 방망이로 때리고 총으로 쏴 살해한 사실도 드러났다.

혼켄은 2005년 사형을 선고받았고, 혼켄의 여자친구는 사형선고를 받았다가 이후 종신형으로 감형됐다.

법원에서 혼켄은 살인 혐의를 전면 부인했으나 무고하다고 주장하진 않았다.

혼켄의 재판을 맡았던 판사는 원칙적으론 사형제에 반대한다면서도 그만은 사형받아 마땅하다고 말하기도 했다.

도널드 트럼프 행정부는 이번 주 연방정부 차원 사형집행을 17년 만에 재개했다.

앞서 14일에는 1996년 아칸소주에서 총기거래상과 그의 아내, 8살 딸 등 3명을 살해한 대니얼 루이스 리의 사형이 집행됐다. 리도 호켄과 마찬가지로 테러호트 연방교도소에 수감된 상태였다.

피해자 유족이 법원에 사형 집행 연기를 요청하고 워싱턴DC 연방지방법원이 이를 받아들이면서 사형 몇 시간을 앞두고 집행이 정지됐다가 연방대법원이 하루 만에 이 결정을 뒤집으면서 결국 사형됐다.

같은 사형수로서 리와 친구가 됐던 호켄은 리의 사형집행에 제동이 걸렸다가 번복된 사실을 알았고 리의 사형에 분노했다고 지난 10여년간 호켄을 면회해온 수녀 베티 도너휴가 전했다.

16일에는 1996년 16살 소녀를 성폭행한 뒤 살해한 켄사스주 사형수 웨슬리 퍼키가 사형됐다.

일각에서는 트럼프 대통령이 오는 11월 대통령선거에서 보수층을 결집하려는 목적에서 이전 행정부가 미뤄온 사형을 한꺼번에 집행하고 있다고 지적하기도 한다.
