검찰, 이만희 총회장 첫 소환조사…지병호소로 4시간만에 종료(종합)

변호사 대동하고 수원지검 출석…검찰 "추후 재소환할 것"

신천지 간부 3명 구속 후 코로나 방역방해 수사 속도

(수원=연합뉴스) 강영훈 기자 = 정부의 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 방역 활동을 방해한 혐의를 받는 이만희(89) 신천지 예수교 증거장막성전(신천지) 총회장을 검찰이 처음으로 소환 조사했다.

그러나 검찰은 이 총회장이 조사 도중 지병을 호소하자 4시간만에 조사를 중단하고 귀가 조치했다.

수원지검 형사6부(박승대 부장검사)는 17일 감염병예방법 위반 및 특정경제범죄가중처벌법상 횡령·배임 등의 혐의를 받는 이 총회장을 소환조사했다고 밝혔다.

이 총회장은 신천지 대구교회를 중심으로 코로나19가 확산하던 지난 2월 방역당국에 신도명단과 집회장소를 축소해 보고하는 등 허위의 자료를 제출하고, 검찰 수사에 대비해 관련 자료를 폐기하는 등 증거를 인멸한 혐의를 받고 있다.

또 부정한 방법으로 100억원대 부동산을 형성하고, 헌금을 빼돌린 혐의도 받는다.

이 총회장에 대한 소환 조사는 검찰이 지난 2월 수사에 착수한 이후 이날 처음으로 이뤄졌으나, 불과 4시간 만에 중단됐다.

오전 9시 30분께 변호사를 대동하고 수원지검에 출석한 이 총회장은 조사를 받던 중 지병을 호소했고, 검찰은 개인주치의의 소견에 따라 오후 1시 30분께 조사를 중단하고 귀가시켰다.

이 총회장 소환에 앞서 검찰은 지난 8일 감염병예방법 위반, 위계에 의한 공무집행 방해, 증거인멸교사 등의 혐의로 신천지 과천 총회본부 소속 총무 A씨 등 3명을 구속했다.

당시 구속영장 청구 대상에 포함되지 않았던 이 회장에 대해 일각에서는 건강이상설을 제기한 바 있으나, 그의 건강상태에 대해서는 정확히 알려진 바 없다.

다만 검찰이 이 총회장을 소환한다면, 그의 건강상태는 물론 여러 상황을 고려해 하루 안에 조사를 마치는 '원샷 조사'로 끝낼 것이라는 관측이 많았다.

검찰 관계자는 "이 총회장에 대해서는 추후 소환 일정을 잡아 재소환 조사할 것"이라며 "신천지 수사와 관련해 A씨 등 3명을 구속한 이후 추가로 구속한 관계자는 없다"고 말했다.

한편 전국신천지피해자연대(전피연)는 지난 2월 27일 감염병예방법 위반과 특정경제범죄가중처벌법상 횡령·배임 혐의로 이 총회장을 검찰에 고발했다.

사건을 배당받은 수원지검은 고발인 조사를 진행하고, 신천지가 제출한 자료와 방역 당국이 확보한 자료 간의 불일치 사례를 확인하는 등 수사를 벌여왔다.

이어 지난 5월 22일에는 과천 총회본부와 가평 평화의 궁전 등 신천지 관련 시설을 압수수색 하는 등 강제수사로 전환했고, 이로부터 2개월여 만에 신천지 간부 3명을 구속했다.
