인도, 중국 국경 인근에 군병력 3만5천명 추가 배치 추진

최전방 분쟁지 철수 작업 와중에 배후 지원은 강화

(뉴델리=연합뉴스) 김영현 특파원 = 중국과 국경 문제로 갈등을 빚고 있는 인도가 분쟁지 배후 지역에 수만 명의 군병력을 추가로 배치할 전망이다.

31일 타임스나우뉴스 등 현지 언론에 따르면 인도 정부는 라다크 등 중국 국경 인근 지역에 3만5천명의 군병력을 추가 배치하는 안을 준비 중이다.

인도와 중국은 지난달 15일 국경 유혈 충돌 후 라다크 동쪽 지역의 갈완 계곡 등 해당 최전방 분쟁지에서 철수 작업을 진행 중이다.

하지만 이런 가운데 인도는 만일의 사태에 대비해 국경에 긴급 투입할 수 있는 배후 병력과 장비는 오히려 보강하려 하는 것이다.

특히 이번에는 현지 국경 지대의 거친 자연환경을 고려해 혹한과 고원지대 환경에서 복무한 경험이 있는 이들을 주로 투입하는 것으로 알려졌다.

중국 역시 최전방에서는 병력을 물리고 있지만, 국경 인근 경계는 오히려 강화하는 분위기인 것으로 전해졌다.

안보·국방 분야 인도 싱크탱크인 USI의 B K 샤르마는 "추가된 양측 병력은 고위급 정치인 간의 관계회복 움직임 없이는 물러나지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.

유혈 충돌 지역 등 분쟁지에서의 양국 군인 철수도 아직 완료되지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.

인도 외교부는 전날 "분쟁지의 군사 철수가 어느 정도 이뤄졌지만, 완전히 마무리되지는 않았다"고 말했다.

앞서 지난달 15일 밤 갈완 계곡에서는 중국군과 인도군 600여명이 무력 충돌, 수십명의 사상자가 발생했다.

인도 육군은 이 충돌로 자국 군인 20명이 사망했다고 밝혔고, 중국 측도 피해 규모는 밝히지 않았지만 역시 사상자가 생긴 것으로 알려졌다.

이후 양측은 같은 달 22일 고위급 군사 회담에 이어 여러 차례 군단장급 회담 등을 열고 주요 분쟁지 부대 철수에 합의했다.

와중에 중국군은 최근 국경지대에서 여러 차례 실탄 훈련을 하는 등 인도군을 압박하는 작업도 병행했다.

인도군도 국경 인근에 T-90 탱크를 투입하고 미그-29 전투기와 공격 헬기 아파치를 전진 배치했으며, 대공 미사일 시스템도 추가로 구축했다.

인도와 중국은 국경 문제로 1962년 전쟁까지 치렀지만, 아직도 국경을 확정하지 못한 채 3천488㎞에 이르는 실질통제선(LAC)을 사실상 국경으로 삼고 있다.
