(경주=연합뉴스) 손대성 기자 = 트라이애슬론(철인3종경기) 유망주 고 최숙현 선수가 극단적 선택을 할 때까지 전 소속팀인 경북 경주시가 늑장 대응했다는 지적을 받고 있다.

9일 경주시에 따르면 최 선수 아버지는 지난 2월 6일 경주시를 찾아 최 선수가 훈련 중에 가혹행위를 당했다는 내용을 설명하고 징계를 요청했다.

최 선수는 2017년과 2019년 경주시청 소속으로 활동하다가 올해 1월 부산시체육회로 팀을 옮겼다.

이에 경주시 담당 부서 공무원은 경주시청 소속 트라이애슬론팀에서 활동하다가 다른 곳으로 옮긴 선수 가운데 연락이 닿은 5명을 상대로 실태를 파악했다.

이 가운데 2명은 특별한 문제가 없었다거나 진술을 거부했지만, 나머지 3명은 구체적으로 폭행 등을 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

그러나 경주시는 2월 중에 조사를 마쳤음에도 감독이나 선배 선수에 대해 곧바로 조처하지 않았다.

경주시청 트라이애슬론팀이 올해 1월부터 3월 중순까지 일정으로 뉴질랜드에 전지훈련을 떠난 상태였기 때문이다.

이러는 사이 최 선수는 3월 초에 경주시청 트라이애슬론팀 감독, 팀닥터(운동처방사), 선배 선수 2명을 폭행 등 혐의로 검찰에 고소했다.

이어 검찰 수사 지시를 받은 경찰이 3월 11일 수사에 나서자 경주시는 트라이애슬론팀에 대한 조치를 미뤘다.

경주시 관계자는 "늑장 대응하려고 한 것이 아니라 트라이애슬론팀이 전지훈련을 떠나다 보니 곧바로 대응하지 못했다"고 말했다.

한편 김규봉 감독 등 이번 사건 피의자들에 대해 검찰이 출국 금지 조치한 것으로 알려졌다.
