WHO, 아스트라제네카 백신 임상 일시중단에 '안전성' 재강조

(제네바=연합뉴스) 임은진 특파원 = 세계보건기구(WHO)가 9일(현지시간) 영국 제약사 아스트라제네카의 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신 후보에 대한 임상시험 일시 중단과 관련, 이는 드문 일이 아니라면서 백신의 안전성을 거듭 강조했다.

로이터통신에 따르면 WHO는 "백신 개발자가 임상시험의 과학적 무결성을 보장하고 백신 개발에 대한 표준 지침과 규정을 준수하는 것을 보게 돼 우리는 기쁘다"고 밝혔다.

그러면서 "(임상시험) 참가자의 안전, 백신의 안전성과 효능을 보장하기 위해 모든 백신 시험에서 규약을 엄격히 준수해야 한다"고 말했다.

앞서 미국 CNN 방송은 전날 임상시험 참가자 중 한 명에게서 원인이 밝혀지지 않은 질환이 발견돼 아스트라제네카의 임상시험이 잠정 중단됐다고 보도했다.

아스트라제네카 측도 성명에서 "임상시험에서 설명되지 않을 수 있는 질환이 발견되고 조사가 이뤄질 때 취해지는 통상적인 조치"라면서 "독립 위원회가 안전성 검토를 할 수 있도록 자발적으로 시험을 잠정 중단했다"고 알렸다.

이 질환과 관련해 미국 뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 소식통을 인용, 질환이 생긴 사람은 영국에서 진행된 2상 임상시험 참가자라면서, 해당 질환은 염증성 증후군인 '횡단성 척수염'(transverse myelitis)이라고 전했다.
