(서울=연합뉴스) 유택형 기자 = 미국 이동통신업체 T모바일이 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 대유행 기간 저소득층 지원 사업의 일환으로 수백만 명의 학생들에게 인터넷 무료 이용 서비스를 제공하기로 했다고 경제매체 폭스비즈니스가 7일 보도했다.

T모바일은 대상 학생들에게 10년간 연간 최대 100GB의 무선 인터넷과 태블릿PC나 노트북의 실비 사용 접근 권한 등을 제공할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

이 회사 마이크 시버트 최고경영자(CEO)는 "인터넷 접속을 하지 못하는 어린이들은 뒤처질 것"이라며 "코로나19 대유행으로 학교 수업이 원격 수업으로 전환된 상황이어서 (인터넷 접근 문제가) 더 중요해졌다"고 강조했다.

저소득층의 인터넷 무료 이용 서비스 지원책은 애초 지난해 T모바일이 스프린트와 합병을 시도하는 과정에서 처음 언급됐다.

T모바일은 최근 스프린트와 합병을 마무리하면서 가입자 수 기준 미국내 2위 이통사로 부상했다.
