(서울=연합뉴스) 김유아 기자 = 미국에서 흑인 남성 대니얼 프루드가 경찰이 씌운 복면으로 인해 질식사한 사건이 뒤늦게 알려지며 논란이 커지자 경찰 고위직 인사들이 결국 사임했다.

8일(현지시간) 뉴욕타임스(NYT)와 로이터통신 등에 따르면 라론 싱글터리 뉴욕주 로체스터시 경찰국장은 이날 성명을 내고 "나의 인격을 파괴하려는 외부 세력들의 시도에 가만히 앉아 당하고 있진 않을 것"이라며 이달 말 물러나겠다고 발표했다.

싱글터리는 "프루드의 사망 사실을 보고받은 뒤 내가 취한 조치들에 대한 왜곡된 묘사와 정치화는 사실에 기반한 것이 아니며 내 신념과도 다르다"며 억울함을 토로했다.

NYT는 싱글터리와 함께 이날 조지프 모라비토 부국장과 익명의 본부장 1명 등이 사임하는 등 로체스터시 경찰 고위직 인사들이 이날 사임하거나 강등됐다고 전했다.

지난 3월 로체스터 경찰은 나체로 밖에서 돌아다니는 사람이 있다는 신고를 받고 출동해 향정신성의약품에 취해 돌아다니던 프루드를 체포했다.

당시 프루드가 땅에 침을 뱉고 자리에서 일어나려 하자 경찰이 두건을 씌우고 엎드리게 한 뒤 얼굴을 눌렀다. 이 과정에서 프루드는 의식을 잃었고, 결국 사망했다.

이후 현장 상황이 담긴 영상이 5개월 뒤 유족에 의해 공개되면서 경찰이 사건을 은폐하려 했다는 의혹이 제기됐고 대규모 항의 시위가 이어졌다. 일부 인권단체는 싱글터리의 사임을 요구하기도 했다.

그러나 싱글터리는 프루드 사망 사건 직후 자신이 내사를 지시했다며 은폐 의혹을 부인했다.

이날 워런 시장은 싱글터리의 사임을 요구한 적은 없다면서도 화상으로 로체스터 시의회에 참석해 "로체스터 경찰 수뇌부 전원이 사임을 발표했다"고 전했다.

흑인 인권단체들은 싱글터리의 사임 소식을 반기면서 워런 시장을 포함해 프루드의 죽음에 책임 있는 모든 이들이 물러날 때까지 압박을 이어갈 것을 다짐했다.
