(서울=연합뉴스) 홍준석 기자 = 제2차 세계대전 당시 노르웨이 인근 해상에서 침몰한 나치 독일의 군함이 80년 만에 발견됐다.

나치 해군의 순양함 '카를스루에'가 지난 6일(현지시간) 노르웨이 인근 해저 488ｍ 지점에서 발견됐다고 미국 CNN 방송이 8일 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 이 나치 군함은 노르웨이 국영 전력기업 슈타트넷이 3년 전 노르웨이와 덴마크 사이 해협에 설치된 해저케이블을 점검하던 중 처음 감지됐다.

올여름 슈타트넷의 수석엔지니어인 올레 페테르 호베르스타는 수중무인탐사기(ROV) 등을 이용해 본격적으로 카를스루에의 흔적을 찾아 나섰다.

호베르스타는 "이 선박이 어뢰 공격을 받은 모습을 보고 제2차 세계대전 당시 쓰인 배라고 생각했다"면서 "선박에 설치된 대포를 보고는 거대한 군함임을 짐작할 수 있었다"고 말했다.

또 "발견한 군함의 크기가 너무 커 놀랐다"면서 "이러한 전쟁의 잔해를 찾는 것은 아주 드물면서도 흥분되는 일"이라고 덧붙였다.

바닷속에서 80년의 세월을 보낸 카를스루에는 여전히 나치 문양을 달고 있었으며, 선체 길이는 약 174ｍ였다.

노르웨이는 1939년 9월 제2차 세계대전이 발발하자 중립국을 표방했다.

하지만 아돌프 히틀러는 1940년 4월 노르웨이를 침공하기로 결정했고, 독일군은 오슬로와 베르겐, 트론헤임, 나르비크 등 항구도시를 빠르게 점령해나갔다.

노르웨이는 연합국의 지원을 받으면서 항전했음에도 1940년 6월 독일군에 패배했고, 1945년 4월 해방 때까지 나치 지배를 받았다.

당시 나치 독일이 노르웨이 남부 항구도시 크리스티안산을 공격하던 중 카를스루에는 노르웨이군 포병과 영국군 잠수함의 공격을 받고 침몰했다.

1940년 출간된 독일 해군소장 오토 솅크의 저서에 따르면 카를스루에가 크리스티안산의 피오르 해안(빙하에 의해 형성된 U자형의 좁고 긴 해안)에 진입했을 때 노르웨이군과 영국군의 협공을 받았으며 짙은 안개가 꼈었던 것으로 추정됐다.

노르웨이 해양박물관의 고고학자 프로데 크발뢰는 지난 6일 성명을 통해 "카를스루에는 독일이 노르웨이를 침공하던 중 대형 군함으로는 유일하게 실종됐다"면서 "이 군함이 어디에서 최후를 맞았는지 드디어 알게 됐다"라고 말했다.
