'여론조사 열세 뒤집는다'…트럼프, 첫 1대1 TV토론에 승부수

말실수 잦은 바이든 공략 채비…코로나19로 TV토론 더 중요

(서울=연합뉴스) 이윤영 기자 = 오는 29일(현지시간) 열리는 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 조 바이든 민주당 대선 후보 간 첫 대선 TV 토론을 앞두고 트럼프 캠프가 단단히 벼르고 있다.

대선을 두 달도 채 남겨놓지 않은 시점에서 바이든에게 뒤지고 있는 여론조사 흐름을 뒤엎을 기회가 될 것이라는 판단에서다.

8일(현지시간) 워싱턴포스트(WP), AP통신 등에 따르면 트럼프 대선 캠프의 빌 스테피언 선대본부장은 이날 기자들과의 콘퍼런스콜에서 바이든 후보의 토론 실력에 대해 "아주 잘한다"면서 "다른 곳에서는 그렇지 않지만, 토론 무대에서만큼은 엄청난 상대"라고 말했다.

트럼프 대통령이 걸핏하면 바이든 후보의 언변 능력을 깎아내렸던 것에 비하면 '이례적 칭찬'인 셈인데, TV 토론에서는 트럼프가 우위일 것이라는 전망 속에서 기대감을 일부러 낮추려는 전략으로 보인다고 미국 언론은 해석했다.

실제 최근 각종 여론조사에서 트럼프 대통령은 바이든 후보보다 10% 포인트가량 뒤처진 것으로 나오지만, 일대일 토론에서만큼은 트럼프가 더 잘할 것으로 보는 유권자가 많은 것으로 나타났다.

일간 USA투데이와 서퍽대가 지난달 28∼31일 유권자 1천명을 상대로 실시한 여론조사 결과 응답자의 47%가 트럼프 대통령이 토론에서 이길 것으로 예상, 바이든 승리를 점친 유권자보다 10%포인트 더 많았다.

이런 결과는 트럼프 대통령이 뛰어난 순발력으로 공격적인 토론을 하는 스타일인 데 비해 바이든 후보는 상대적으로 토론 능력이 약하고 말이 다소 어눌하다는 평가를 받기 때문으로 해석된다. 바이든 후보는 평소 말을 더듬는 버릇이 있는 데다 최근 잇따른 실언으로 구설에 오르기도 했다.

특히 이번 TV토론은 다른 대선 때보다 훨씬 더 중요해졌는데, 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산으로 오프라인 선거 유세가 크게 위축됐기 때문이다. 직접 대면할 기회가 줄어든 만큼 후보들이나 유권자들 모두 TV토론에 더 관심을 가질 수밖에 없다는 것이다.

트럼프 캠프는 이런 상황 속에서 이달 말부터 시작되는 TV토론을 부동층 유권자를 공략할 마지막 남은 기회로 보고 있다고 정치전문 매체 더힐은 전했다.

2016년 대선 때 트럼프 캠프의 고문이었던 샘 넌버그는 "이번에는 선거 유세가 별로 없기 때문에 트럼프 대통령에게도 이번 토론은 그 어느 때보다 중요해질 것"이라고 말했다.

트럼프 캠프는 바이든 후보가 이번 TV 토론에 직접 모습을 드러내지 않고 스카이프 등을 통한 화상 토론 방식으로 참여할 수도 있다는 추측을 내놓기도 했다.

바이든 후보는 코로나19 확산 여파로 그동안 오프라인보다는 온라인 유세에 집중해왔는데, 이번에도 코로나19 상황을 내세워 메모나 프롬프터에 의존할 수 있는 화상토론 방식을 택할 수 있다는 주장이다.

하지만 바이든 후보는 최근 열린 기자회견에서 "대통령과 토론하는 것을 기대하고 있다"며 "이 나라를 다시 되돌려 놓기 위해 우리가 해야 할 것들을 명확하게 제시할 것"이라고 말했다고 더힐은 전했다.
