유니세프·WHO "전 세계 학교 43% 손 씻을 시설 부족"

(제네바=연합뉴스) 임은진 특파원 = 유엔아동기금(UNICEF·유니세프)과 세계보건기구(WHO)는 전 세계 학교의 43%에서 물과 비누로 손을 씻을 수 있는 시설이 부족한 것으로 나타났다고 13일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

이에 따라 약 8억1천800만 명의 어린이들이 학교에서 제대로 손을 씻지 못해 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)과 다른 전염병에 걸릴 위험이 증가할 수 있다고 지적했다.

특히 이들 중 3분의 1가량이 사하라 사막 이남의 아프리카 어린이들이라고 두 기구는 전했다.

손 깨끗이 씻기는 사회적 거리 두기, 마스크 착용 등과 함께 팬데믹(전염병의 세계적 대유행)으로 번진 코로나19를 예방할 수 있는 기본 방역 수칙 중 하나다.

헨리에타 포어 유니세프 총재는 "코로나19 대유행에 따른 휴교는 아동의 교육과 웰빙에 전례 없는 도전"이라며 "우리는 이들의 학습을 우선시해야 한다"고 말했다.

그러면서 "이는 곧 학교가 손 위생, 깨끗한 식수, 안전한 위생 시설을 포함해 안전하게 다시 문을 열 수 있도록 하는 것을 의미한다"고 강조했다.

테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스 WHO 사무총장도 "학교를 포함한 모든 시설에서 효과적으로 감염을 예방하고 통제를 하려면 물과 위생 시설에 대한 접근이 필수적"이라고 설명했다.

그는 "이런 내용은 현재 진행 중인 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 학교의 안전한 재개방과 운영을 위한 정부 전략의 초점이 돼야 한다"고 지적했다.
