(상하이=연합뉴스) 차대운 특파원 = 남중국해와 대만 일대를 중심으로 우발적 충돌이 우려될 정도로 미중 간 군사적 갈등이 격화한 가운데 양국 국방장관이 전화 통화를 해 위기관리에 나섰지만 큰 입장 차이를 보였다.

7일 관영 신화통신에 따르면 마크 에스퍼 미국 국방장관과 웨이펑허(魏鳳和) 중국 국방부장은 6일(현지시간) 전화 통화를 하고 양국 간 군사 문제와 향후 군 교류 문제 등을 논의했다.

신화통신은 웨이 부장이 남중국해, 대만, '미국이 중국의 이름을 더럽히는 문제'와 관련해 중국의 원칙적인 입장을 전달했다고 보도했다.

웨이 부장은 "미국 측이 잘못된 언행을 멈추고, 해상 위험을 통제해야 한다"며 "정세를 뜨겁게 만들 위험한 행동을 피하고 지역의 평화와 안정을 수호해야 한다"고 주장했다.

이에 에스퍼 장관은 미중 관계가 긴장된 때 양국 군대가 대화와 협상을 통해 위기를 통제하고 오판을 방지함으로써 위험을 낮춰야 한다고 언급했다고 신화통신은 전했다.

최근 미중 갈등이 신냉전으로 치닫는 가운데 미국과 중국은 남중국해와 대만해협 일대를 중심으로 서로 군사 활동의 빈도와 강도를 높여가고 있어 과거 어느 때보다 우발적인 군사 충돌 우려가 커졌다는 평가가 나온다.

특히 미국 정부 고위관리가 6년 만에 대만을 방문하기로 한 가운데 환구시보(環球時報) 등 중국 관영 매체들은 중국이 '군사 카드'를 사용할 수 있다고 노골적인 위협을 가하기도 했다.
