(테헤란=연합뉴스) 강훈상 특파원 = 아랍에미리트(UAE) 정부가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 감염자를 탐지하기 위해 국내 공항에 경찰견을 배치했다고 국영 WAM통신이 지난달 31일(현지시간) 보도했다.

WAM통신은 "경찰견이 사람과 직접 접촉하지 않고도 감염이 의심되는 이를 가려낼 수 있는 독특한 방법을 마련했다"라며 "관련 연구와 전문가 회의를 통해 경찰견을 공항에 배치하기로 했다"라고 전했다.

관련 연구를 담당한 전담팀은 사람의 겨드랑이에서 채취한 표본을 개에게 냄새를 맡도록 해 감염 의심자를 몇 초 만에 가려내는 훈련을 했다.

UAE 내무부의 시험 자료에 따르면 92%의 정확도로 감염자를 가려냈다.

UAE 보건당국은 국제 항공편이 재개되면서 입국자가 점점 많아지는 가운데 경찰견은 방역망을 한층 두껍게 하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대했다.

잘 훈련된 개는 말라리아, 결핵 등 일부 질환에 걸린 환자를 탐지할 수 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
