늦여름 가을 문턱에 찾아오는 작지만 큰 영화들

부산·베를린·로카르노·칸 초청작들 잇달아 개봉

(서울=연합뉴스) 한미희 기자 = 길고 긴 장마가 끝나고 이어질 뜨거운 늦여름과 가을에는 '테넷'과 '뮬란', '승리호' 등 한여름 시장에서 한발 물러났던 대형 영화들이 열전을 예고하고 있지만, 그 사이에서 놓치기 아까운 작품들도 많다.

부산국제영화제를 비롯해 베를린, 칸, 로카르노 등 세계 영화제에서 초청받거나 수상한 작품들이 잇달아 찾아온다.

우선 다음 주에는 지난해 부산국제영화제 화제작 두 편이 나란히 개봉한다. 사춘기 소녀 옥주의 시선으로 가족의 이야기를 다룬 윤단비 감독의 '남매의 여름밤'과 20대 청년에게 성폭행을 당한 69세 여성 효정의 이야기를 통해 인간의 존엄성에 대해 묻는 임선애 감독의 '69세'다.

아직 여린 옥주의 마음속에 몰아치는 소용돌이를 자신의 것인 양 드러낸 신예 최정운(19)과 효정의 단단한 내면을 기품있게 표현한 관록의 예수정(65) 두 주연 배우의 연기가 관객의 마음을 파고든다.

'남매의 여름밤'은 한국영화감독조합상 등을, '69세'는 관객상을 받았고 두 작품 모두 여성 감독의 장편 데뷔작이다. 8월 20일 개봉.

데뷔 20주년을 맞은 장률 감독의 12번째 작품 '후쿠오카'도 27일 개봉한다.

지난해 베를린, 베이징, 타이베이, 후쿠오카, 홍콩 등 세계 영화제에 초청받았고 서울독립영화제 개막작으로 선보였다. 지난 3월 개봉할 예정이었으나 코로나19로 연기됐다.

배우 권해효, 윤제문, 박소담이 각각 해효, 제문, 소담을 연기한다. 한 여자를 동시에 사랑했던 해효와 제문, 그리고 제문이 하는 책방 단골인 소담이 후쿠오카에서 만나 기묘한 여행을 한다.

대만 뉴웨이브를 이끈 거장 에드워드 양(1947∼2007)의 초기작 '공포분자'(1986)는 34년 만에 국내 개봉한다. 장난 전화 한 통에서 시작되는 파장과 비극을 통해 급격히 현대화된 대만 사회를 사는 인물의 불안과 고독을 담아냈다.

'타이베이 스토리'(1985), '고령가 소년 살인사건'(1991)과 함께 타이베이 3부작을 이루는 작품이다. 상영 시간이 4시간에 이르는 '고령가 살인 사건'은 26년 만인 2017년, '타이베이 스토리'는 34년만인 2019년 개봉한 바 있다.

1987년 제40회 로카르노국제영화제에서 은표범상을 받은 '공포분자'는 올해 영화제(8월 5∼15일)에서 다시 보고 싶은 고전으로 짐 자무시의 '천국보다 낯선', 미카엘 하네케의 '7번째 대륙' 등과 함께 상영되기도 했다. 9월 17일 개봉.

같은 날 올해 베를린국제영화제 은곰상(감독상)을 받은 홍상수 감독의 24번째 장편영화 '도망친 여자'도 개봉한다. 연인 김민희와 함께한 7번째 영화다. 남편이 출장을 간 사이 세 명의 친구를 만나는 감희를 따라가는 이야기다.

2011년 제64회 칸국제영화제 감독상을 받은 니콜라스 빈딩 레픈 감독의 '드라이브'도 9월 중 재개봉할 예정이다. 라이언 고슬링이 삶의 의미라곤 없다가 의미가 된 여자(캐리 멀리건 분)를 위해 질주하는 '드라이버' 역으로 거칠고 강력한 캐릭터의 매력을 뿜어낸다.
