(제네바=연합뉴스) 임은진 특파원 = 슬로베니아를 방문 중인 마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관이 13일(현지시간) 데이터 네트워크와 에너지 사업에서 중국과 러시아의 참여 배제를 촉구했다고 블룸버그, 로이터 통신이 보도했다.

폼페이오 장관은 이날 북서부 블레드에서 슬로베니아와 5세대 이동통신(5G) 보안에 관한 선언문에 서명을 마친 뒤 "여론의 흐름(tide)은 우리 모두의 자유를 제한하려는 중국 공산당의 노력에서 등을 돌리고 있다"고 주장했다.

그러면서 슬로베니아가 이번 서명을 통해 "사람과 정보를 통제하려는 중국의 노력을 포함한 권위적 위협으로부터 보호를 확보했다"고 밝혔다.

미국은 중국의 통신장비업체 화웨이가 중국 공산당과 연계돼 있어 이 업체의 장비를 사용하면 기밀이나 개인 정보가 탈취당할 수 있다면서 동맹국들에 사용 자제를 압박하고 있다.

폼페이오 장관은 또 슬로베니아와 러시아에 대한 에너지 의존도를 낮추는 데 대해 의견을 나눴다고 전했다.

그는 "우리는 슬로베니아의 정치적 독립과 경제적 번영을 확보하는 데 도움을 줄 깨끗하고 믿을 수 있으며 다양한 에너지를 전달할 차세대 핵기술의 엄청난 잠재력에 관해 이야기했다"고 말했다.

슬로베니아는 옛 유고슬라비아 국가 중 유일하게 원자력 발전소를 보유하고 있다.

폼페이오 장관은 아울러 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 부인인 멜라니아 여사가 슬로베니아에 안부를 전해달라고 했다고 덧붙였다. 슬로베니아는 멜라니아 여사의 고국이다.
