자신의 증상에 맞는 진료 과목이 있는지, 위치는 어디인지. 때론 직원들의 친절도까지 인터넷 후기 등을 통해 찾아봅니다.

그러나 병원 선택에서 무엇보다 중요한 것은 의료진의 전문성일 텐데요.

최근 미국에선 의사의 전문성을 판단하는 방법을 제시한 혈관외과학회 학술지 논문이 사회적 물의를 빚었습니다.

"의사의 전문성은 그 사람의 SNS를 들여다보면 알 수 있다."

요즘 페이스북이나 유튜브를 통해 대중에게 의료 정보를 공유하는 의사들이 많아지기는 했습니다.

그러나 이 논문은 학술적 성과나 전문 지식이 아니라 의사의 사생활을 들여다보란 조언으로 논란이 됐습니다.

논문에서는 '혈관외과의 젊은 의사들'이 SNS에 올리는 '비전문적' 콘텐츠를 분류했는데요.

"의사가 속옷, 핼러윈 복장, 수영복/비키니 등 '부적절한 의상'을 입고 사진을 찍은 경우 비전문적일 수 있다."

지난해 12월 온라인에 게재된 이 논문은 학술지 8월호 지면에 다시 실리기로 하며 수많은 의사의 공분을 샀습니다.

특히 비키니 수영복을 콕 집어 부적절한 의상이라고 표현한 부분이 여의사들의 반감을 샀죠.

이 논문의 연구자들이 20~30대 남성이었다는 사실은 미국판 '여혐 논란'에 불을 붙였습니다.

SNS에는 여의사들이 비키니를 입고 찍은 인증샷이 관련 해시태그(#MedBikini)와 함께 우후죽순 올라오기 시작했습니다

"수영복을 입었다고 내가 훌륭한 의사가 될 수 없는 건 아니다."

"가슴 아프게도, 논문의 내용은 의료계가 얼마나 후진적인지 보여준다. 의사도 사람이다."

남자 의사들도 온라인 시위에 동참했습니다.

"내 아저씨 몸매를 보고 싶은 사람은 없겠지만 여성 동료들을 지지하기 위해 올린다."

지난 5월 러시아에서도 이와 비슷한 논란이 벌어진 적이 있습니다.

코로나19로 투명 보호복을 입고 일하던 간호사가 더위를 참다못해 그 속에 비키니를 입어 징계를 받은 거죠.

"의료진 의상이 무슨 상관? 중요한 건 그들의 임무."

현지 누리꾼들은 이런 조치에 항의하며 간호사를 응원하고자 보호복 속에 수영복만 입은 인증샷을 올렸습니다.

거센 비판에 보건당국과 병원은 간호사에 대한 징계를 철회한 것으로 알려졌는데요.

'비키니 논란'을 일으킨 논문 연구진 일부도 결국 SNS를 통해 사과했습니다.

"우리는 의학계에서 전문성의 정의가 빠르게 변하고 있다는 걸 깨달았다."

해당 학술지 편집진도 SNS를 통해 "연구 설계 오류가 있었다"고 사과하며 논문을 철회했습니다.
