(이스탄불=연합뉴스) 김승욱 특파원 = 동지중해 천연가스 탐사·시추를 놓고 터키와 그리스 간 긴장이 고조하는 가운데 레제프 타이이프 에르도안 대통령이 "불필요한 모험은 하지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.

에르도안 대통령은 13일(현지시간) 수도 앙카라에서 열린 집권 정의개발당(AKP)의 창당 19주년 기념식 연설에서 "동지중해에서 그리스와 갈등을 해결하는 길은 대화와 협상"이라며 이같이 말했다.

그러면서 "우리는 불필요한 모험을 택하거나 긴장을 추구하지 않을 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

그러나 에르도안 대통령은 그리스와 키프로스공화국(키프로스)을 언급하며 "이들은 지역 긴장을 고조하고 터키와 북키프로스튀르크공화국(북키프로스)의 권리를 무시하고 있다"고 지적했다.

이어 "에게해(그리스와 터키 사이 바다)와 지중해에서 그리스의 입장은 악의적"이라며 "에게해에서 가장 작은 섬인 카스텔로리조에 근거한 그리스의 해양 관할권 주장은 우스꽝스럽고 근거 없는 것"이라고 비판했다.

아울러 "지중해 동부에서 터키의 행동은 국제법과 완전히 일치한다"며 "터키는 이 지역에서 다른 나라의 어떤 권리도 침해할 의도가 없지만, 다른 나라가 우리의 권리를 침해하는 것을 용납하지도 않을 것"이라고 강조했다.

터키는 지중해 동부 천연가스 탐사·시추를 두고 그리스·키프로스와 갈등을 빚고 있다.

지난 11일 터키 외교부는 이달 말까지 지질 조사선 '오루츠 레이스'가 터키 안탈리아 남부 해역과 키프로스 섬 서쪽 해역에서 천연가스 탐사에 나설 것이라고 밝혔다.

오루츠 레이스의 작업해역은 키프로스의 배타적 경제수역(EEZ)은 물론 로도스·카파토스·카스텔로리조 섬 남쪽 해역 등 그리스가 주장하는 EEZ와도 겹친다.

1차 세계대전 종전 직후 전쟁을 벌인 터키와 그리스는 1923년 로잔 조약을 체결하고 이스탄불 인근 동트라키아 지역은 터키의 영토로, 터키와 그리스 사이 바다인 에게해(海)의 섬 대부분은 그리스 영토로 하는 데 합의했다.

그러나 터키에서 맨눈으로 확인 가능한 섬까지 그리스 영토가 되면서 양국은 EEZ를 놓고 수십 년째 갈등을 빚고 있다.

특히, 카스텔로리조 섬은 터키 해안에서 2㎞가량 떨어진 반면, 그리스 본토에서는 약 580㎞ 거리에 있다.

터키는 면적 10㎢에 불과한 카스텔로리조를 근거로 그리스가 4만㎢에 달하는 해양 관할권을 주장한다고 비판해왔다.

그리스는 터키의 동지중해 천연가스 탐사·시추에 반발해 유럽연합(EU)에 긴급회의 소집을 요청했으며, 이에 따라 EU는 오는 15일 화상 외무장관회의를 개최할 예정이다.

최근 리비아 내전을 두고 터키와 갈등을 빚고 있는 프랑스는 그리스·키프로스에 군사지원을 강화하기로 했다.

에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령은 전날 트위터를 통해 "터키의 일방적인 천연가스 탐사 결정이 긴장을 야기하고 있다"고 비판했다.

프랑스군은 이날 그리스의 크레타 섬에 라팔 전투기 2대를 배치했으며, 공격헬기를 탑재한 강습상륙함 토네르가 키프로스 해역에서 그리스 해군과 합동 훈련에 참여했다고 밝혔다.
