(서울=연합뉴스) 엄남석 기자 = 고대 화성에는 비가 내리고 강물이 흘렀으며, 대형 바다가 있었다는 것이 정설처럼 돼왔다. 화성 표면에 형성된 수많은 계곡이 그 근거가 돼왔는데, 이런 계곡이 강물이 흘러 형성된 것이 아니라 빙하 밑의 얼음이 녹아 흐르면서 만들어진 것이라는 새로운 연구 결과가 나왔다.

캐나다 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학(UBC)에 따르면 이 대학 지구·해양·대기과학과 마크 젤리넥 교수 등이 참여한 연구팀은 1만개 이상 화성 계곡을 분석하고 캐나다 북극해제도 섬들의 빙하 밑 수로(subglacial channel)와 비교해 이런 결론을 얻었다고 과학 저널 '네이처 지구과학'(Nature Geoscience) 최신호에 발표했다.

이는 수십억년 전 고대 화성이 "따뜻하고 습한"(warm and wet) 기후를 가졌다는 통념을 뒤엎은 것이다.

논문 제1저자인 안나 그라우 갈로프레 박사는 "화성에서 계곡이 발견된 이후 지난 40년간 강이 흘러 이런 계곡이 형성됐다는 것이 기본 가정이 돼왔다"면서 그러나 서로 형태가 다른 계곡이 있다는 것은 지구에서와 마찬가지로 다양한 계곡 형성 과정이 존재한다는 점을 나타내는 것이라고 지적했다.

연구팀은 화성 계곡 중 상당수가 북극해제도의 데번 섬 빙하 밑 수로와 유사한 점에 착안해 본격적인 연구에 착수했다.

연구팀은 계곡의 침식과정을 추론할 수 있는 알고리즘을 활용해 화성 계곡을 분석했다.

그 결과, 화성 계곡 중 상당수는 고대 빙하 밑에서 얼음 녹은 물이 흐르면서 광범위한 침식 작용을 일으켜 만들어진 것으로, 지표수의 침식 작용과 일치하는 특징을 보인 계곡은 일부에 그친 것으로 밝혀졌다.

젤리넥 교수는 "화성 표면의 지형학적 특징을 이용해 화성의 특징과 진화를 통계적으로 유의미한 방식으로 정교하게 재구성한 것은 획기적인 것"이라고 자평했다.

이번 연구 결과는 약 38억년 전 태양이 덜 강렬했던 시기에 지구보다 더 멀리 떨어져 있던 행성에서 어떻게 계곡이 형성됐는지를 설명하는 데도 도움이 되는 것으로 지적됐다.

기후 모델은 고대 화성에서 계곡이 만들어질 때 기온이 훨씬 더 낮아 표층수가 흐를 수 있는 환경이 아닌 것으로 예측해 모순돼왔는데, 빙하 밑에서 얼음 녹은 물이 고여 자연스럽게 형성된 배수 시스템이 계곡을 만들 수 있다는 점을 보여줌으로써 이런 모순을 해결했다는 것이다.

연구팀은 얼음 밑 환경이 화성의 고대 생물에게는 더 좋은 생존 조건을 제공했을 것으로 추정했다. 빙하 얼음이 물을 보호하고 안정화하는 역할을 했을 뿐만 아니라 수십억년 전 자기장이 사라진 뒤 유해한 태양 복사로부터 생명체를 보호하는 작용을 했을 것이라는 이유에서다.

연구팀은 이번 연구의 초점을 화성에 맞췄으나 새 알고리즘을 활용해 지구 초기 역사에 남은 침식 흔적을 분석하고 탐구하는데 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.

현재는 지구의 빙하 역사를 100만~500만년 전까지 거슬러 올라가며 연구할 수 있지만 이번 연구를 통해 적어도 남극 대륙이 시작된 3천500만년 전이나 그 이전으로 빙하의 전진과 후퇴를 연구할 수 있게 해준다는 것이다.
