'사이코지만 괜찮아' 장영남 "엄여인 참고해 연기했죠"

"아들이 '미친 거 아니야' 하더라…연기 25년에 번아웃 오기도"

(서울=연합뉴스) 이정현 기자 박소연 인턴기자 = 완벽주의자 수간호사 박행자가 고문영(서예지 분)의 사이코패스 엄마 도희재라는 사실이 밝혀진 순간 모든 시청자가 뒤통수를 제대로 얻어맞았다.

tvN 주말극 '사이코지만 괜찮아'에서 박행자 겸 도희재 역으로 강렬한 인상을 남긴 배우 장영남(47)을 최근 강남구 신사동의 한 카페에서 만났다. 그는 이번 드라마에 대해 "물음표를 남긴 작품"이었다고 했다.

"첫 촬영부터 박행자가 도희재였다는 걸 알았어요. 다른 배우들은 몰랐지만요. 철저하게 평범한 캐릭터를 연기하기 위해 노력했어요. 그 어떤 부분에서도 시청자들에게 의문을 던져줘서는 안 됐으니까요. 그런데도 의심하는 분들이 있어 참 신기했죠. (웃음) 그래서 도희재보다 박행자를 연기할 때 더 어려웠어요. 어쨌든 시청자들께서 '소름'이라며 좋은 반응을 보여주셔서 성공적이었고 만족도도 컸습니다."

실제로 박행자는 괜찮은 정신병원 안에서 환자를 사랑하는 마음이 가장 큰, 직업정신이 투철한 여성이었고 도희재는 사랑을 전혀 모르는 괴물이었다.

장영남은 "도희재를 연기할 때 재밌겠다고 생각했는데, 막상 박행자로서 연기하는 부분이 더 많아 힘들었다"고 재차 강조했다.

"도희재 캐릭터는 실존하는 (보험금을 노리고 가족들을 해친 연쇄 살인범) '엄여인'에게서 모티프를 얻어 연기했어요. 엄여인이 사이코패스 검사에서 만점을 맞았다고 하더라고요. 그런데 실제로는 아무도 의심하지 않았다고 하니, 위장이 뛰어난 거겠죠. 박행자가 그렇게 살지 않았을까요."

장영남은 이번 작품에서 만난 한류스타 김수현에 대해서도 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다.

그는 "'해를 품은 달'(2012) 때도 눈이 반짝반짝해서 잊을 수 없었는데, 이번에도 그 눈빛이 살아있었다. 눈이 참 신비로운 배우"라며 "좋은 기운을 주는 사람이라는 생각이 들 정도였다"고 말했다.

장영남은 올해로 연기 생활 25년 차다. 1995년 연극무대로 데뷔해 극단 목화, 골목길에서 활동했으며 이후 다양한 영화와 드라마로 활동 반경을 넓혔다. 그는 "연기를 미리 생각해서 가면 다 망쳐서, 현장에 가서 정서에 많이 기대는 편"이란다.

장영남은 이어 "연기를 25년 동안 하다 보니 '번아웃'이 오기도 했다. 나이가 이렇게 들었는데도 여전히 철딱서니 없는 부분도 많다. 물론 배우가 철들면 재미없다고 하지만 이제는 좀 의연해져야겠단 생각을 한다"며 "그런 측면에서 이번 작품은 내가 어떻게 성장해야 할지 고민하게 했다"고 했다.

"여전히 연기할 때 재밌고 설레요. 늘 잘해보고 싶고요. 그러다 보니 가끔은 눈치도 보이고 자신감도 떨어지고 내가 다 틀린 것 같고 그래요. 지금도 그걸 계속 극복해나가는 과정이 있어요. 매번 새로운 캐릭터를 연기하면서."

장영남은 마흔둘에 첫아들을 얻었다. 실제 '엄마 장영남'은 어떤 모습이냐고 물으니 "현실적인 엄마"라고 답했다.

"아들이 '사이코지만 괜찮아'를 보고 '엄마 미친 거 아니야?'라고 하더라고요. (웃음) 하지만 '엄마가 이번에는 마녀야'라고 설명해주니 연기인 걸 잘 받아들였어요. 나중에 사춘기가 와도 이렇게 친구처럼 지내야 할 텐데…."
