미국 '국가안보 위협' 주장 속 내부관계자 의혹제기

(서울=연합뉴스) 이재영 기자 = 세계적으로 인기인 동영상 공유 애플리케이션 '틱톡'을 운영하는 중국 정보통신(IT)업체 바이트댄스가 인도네시아에서 운영하는 뉴스앱에서 중국에 비판적인 기사를 검열해왔다는 의혹이 제기됐다.

로이터통신은 바이트댄스가 재작년부터 올해 중순까지 인도네시아 인기 뉴스앱 '바카 베리타'(Baca Berita)에서 중국 정부를 비판한다고 여겨지는 기사를 노출하지 않거나 삭제해왔다고 6명의 관계자를 인용해 13일(현지시간) 보도했다.

관계자들에 따르면 1989년 톈안먼(天安門) 시위를 나타내는 '톈안먼'이라는 단어나 마오쩌둥(毛澤東)의 이름이 들어간 기사들이 검열대상이었다.

한 관계자는 "국영인 안타라통신사의 기사도 남중국해를 사이에 둔 인도네시아와 중국 간 긴장을 다뤘단 이유로 차단됐다"고 전했다.

바카 베리타는 작년까지 3천만번 이상 다운로드되고 월간 실사용자가 800만명 이상인 인도네시아 최대 뉴스앱이다. 바이트댄스는 2018년 인도네시아에서 틱톡이 '음란물과 신성모독, 부적절한 콘텐츠'를 이유로 금지되자 바카 베리타를 인수했다.

관계자들은 뉴스를 수집하는 데 이용하는 인공지능(AI)에 적용되는 가이드라인을 베이징의 바이트댄스 본사에서 나온 팀이 작성했다고 밝혔다.

또 바카 베리타의 콘텐츠 가이드라인은 바이트댄스가 운영하는 중국 뉴스앱 것을 모방해 일부 현지화한 것이라고 설명했다.

다른 관계자는 "올해 2분기 이전에 검열됐던 기사들을 읽을 수 있게 되자 콘텐츠 가이드라인을 변경하기도 했다"고 전했다.

바카 베리타 측은 의혹을 부인하며 자체 가이드라인과 인도네시아법에 따라 콘텐츠를 조정하고 있다고 밝혔다.

회사는 "대충 검색해봐도 우리가 삭제한다는 형태의 기사와 영상이 수도 없이 나온다"고 주장했다.

바이트댄스는 바카 베리타 측 설명 외에는 더 내놓을 입장이 없다고 밝혔고 중국 당국은 입장요청에 응하지 않았다고 로이터통신은 전했다.

최근 바이트댄스는 틱톡을 둘러싼 미국과 중국의 갈등에 휘말려 곤욕을 치르고 있다.

미국 정부는 틱톡이 중국 공산당의 지령을 받아 미국인들의 개인정보를 중국으로 빼돌릴 수 있다며 국가안보를 명분으로 내세워 미국 내 사용금지나 미국 기업과의 인수합병을 추진하고 있다.
