"시위가 민주주의 짓밟으려 시도"…중도 성향 간츠는 "시위대 보호해야"

(카이로=연합뉴스) 노재현 특파원 = 베냐민 네타냐후(70) 이스라엘 총리가 2일(현지시간) 북한을 거론하며 자신의 퇴진을 요구하는 시위에 대한 현지 언론 보도에 불만을 드러냈다.

네타냐후 총리는 이날 내각 회의에서 자신을 겨냥한 반정부 시위와 관련해 "어떤 폭력도 규탄한다"며 "그것은 설 자리가 없고 우리는 폭력의 어떤 위협도 용납할 수 없다"고 말했다고 이스라엘 매체 타임스오브이스라엘이 보도했다.

네타냐후 총리는 이어 "나는 (폭력 시위에 대해) 민주주의를 짓밟는 시도로 간주한다"며 "아무도 시위를 제한하지 않고 있다"고 우려했다.

나아가 그는 언론이 시위의 나쁜 점을 제대로 보도하지 않는다고 주장했다.

네타냐후 총리는 "언론이 이런 시위들을 부추기고 있다"며 "그들(시위대)이 주민을 꼼짝 못 하게 만들고 도로를 차단하는 것이 조장되고 허용된다"고 말했다.

그러면서 "나는 대부분 언론 매체의 일방적인 면을 비판한다. 그들은 시위를 보도하지 않고 그것(시위)에 참여하고 부추긴다"고 말했다.

또 "(언론의) 그런 왜곡된 동원은 이미 북한과 같은 방식에 도달했다"며 언론이 자신과 가족을 살해하려는 시위대의 위협을 무시한다고 지적했다.

이스라엘 매체 예루살렘포스트는 네타냐후 총리의 발언이 전체주의 국가 북한의 획일적 보도를 염두에 둔 것으로 분석했다.

반면 국방부 장관이자 중도 정당 '청백당' 대표인 베니 간츠는 내각회의에서 시위대를 옹호하는 발언을 했다.

간츠 장관은 "정부는 시위를 허용하고 시위 참가자들을 보호할 책임이 있다"고 말했다.

최근 네타냐후 총리의 부패 혐의와 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태 등으로 반정부 시위가 거세다.

올해 6월부터 예루살렘의 총리 관저 근처에서는 네타냐후 총리의 퇴진을 요구하는 시위가 이어졌고 1일 밤에는 시위 참가자가 1만여명으로 늘었다.

그동안 시위대와 경찰 사이에서 물리적 충돌이 종종 발생했다.

이스라엘에서는 코로나19 사태로 실업률이 20%를 넘는 등 경제가 나빠지자 네타냐후 총리의 인기가 떨어졌다.

여기에 네타냐후 총리가 올해 5월부터 뇌물수수와 배임, 사기 등 부패 혐의로 재판을 받게 되면서 여론이 더욱 악화했다.
