(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 아프리카 인도양 섬나라 모리셔스가 7일(현지시간) 해안에 좌초한 일본 회사 소유 배의 막대한 기름 유출로 인해 '환경 비상사태'를 선포했다.

AP 등 외신에 따르면 프리빈드 주그노트 모리셔스 총리는 위성사진 판독 결과 며칠 전부터 사고 선박에서 수t의 흑갈색 기름이 청록색 바다로 흘러나와 환경적으로 "매우 민감한" 인근 지역으로 퍼져가고 있다고 말했다.

모리셔스 정부는 배에 4천t 가까운 연료가 실려 있고 선체에 균열이 나타났다고 밝혔다.

주그노트 총리는 앞서 모리셔스 정부가 프랑스에 도움을 요청했다고 말했다.

인구 130만명의 모리셔스는 관광산업에 크게 의존하고 있으며 코로나바이러스 팬데믹(세계적 대유행)으로 인해 심한 타격을 받은 터라 이번 기름 유출 사고가 더욱 위험하다는 설명이다.

그는 "우리나라는 좌초한 선박을 다시 띄울 기술과 전문 인력이 없다. 그래서 프랑스와 에마뉘엘 마크롱 대통령에게 지원을 호소했다"고 말했다.

제주도보다 조금 큰 모리셔스와 가장 가까운 이웃은 프랑스령 레위니옹 섬이다.

한때 모리셔스의 식민 모국이었던 프랑스 외무부는 프랑스가 모리셔스의 으뜸 외국인 투자자이자 가장 큰 교역국 가운데 하나라고 말한다.

카비 라마노 모리셔스 환경장관은 "우리는 환경 위기 가운데에 있다"며 기름 유출 배 근처의 블루베이 해양 국립공원 등은 매우 민감한 지역이라고 강조했다.

사고 선박은 지난 7월 25일 밤 모리셔스 산호초 바다에 좌초했으며 배의 선주는 일본 오키요 해상 회사와 나가사키 해운으로 돼 있다.

배 이름은 와카시오 호로 파나마 선적이며, 사고 당시 중국에서 싱가포르를 거쳐 브라질로 가는 도중이었다.

현재 사고 원인과 관련, 주의 태만 등의 가능성을 놓고 모리셔스 경찰의 조사가 진행 중이다.
