뉴질랜드 외교장관 "성추행 혐의 외교관 여기서 조사받으라"

(오클랜드=연합뉴스) 고한성 통신원 = 윈스턴 피터스 뉴질랜드 부총리 겸 외교부 장관이 1일 "뉴질랜드에서 성추행 혐의를 받는 한국 외교관은 뉴질랜드에 들어와서 조사를 받으라"고 말했다.

피터스 장관은 이날 뉴질랜드 스리텔레비전 뉴스허브 프로그램을 통해 제3국에서 고위직으로 근무하는 A씨는 한국이 아니라 뉴질랜드에서 범죄 혐의를 받는 만큼 뉴질랜드에 들어와서 자신의 혐의에 대해 변호해야 한다며 이 같이 밝혔다.

A씨는 2017년 주뉴질랜드 한국대사관에 근무할 당시 대사관 남자 직원의 엉덩이를 손으로 만지는 등 3건의 성추행 혐의를 받고 있다.

이와 관련, 뉴스허브는 최고 징역 7년까지 받을 수 있는 범죄 혐의에 대해 뉴질랜드 경찰이 조사하려고 했으나 한국 관리들이 이들 차단하기도 했다고 밝혔다.

뉴스허브는 현재 A씨에 대한 체포영장도 발부돼 있으나 A씨가 근무하는 나라와 뉴질랜드 간에는 범죄인인도조약도 체결돼 있지 않다고 지적했다.

피터스 장관은 "우리는 줄곧 양국 외교부 최고위급에서 이 문제를 제기해오고 있다"면서 "혐의를 받는 범죄는 한국에서 일어난 범죄가 아니라 뉴질랜드에서 일어난 범죄라는 사실을 기억해야 한다"고 강조했다.

그는 "이제 공은 한국 정부에 넘어갔다. 한국 정부는 그에게 외교관 면책특권을 포기하게 하고 우리나라(뉴질랜드)로 그를 돌려보내야 한다"고 말했다.

그러면서 "그가 생각하는 대로 정말 결백하다면 이곳으로 돌아와 이곳의 사법절차를 따를 수 있을 것"이라며 "그는 외교관 면책특권이라는 걸 가지고 있고 그것이 세계 어디에서나 보호막이 될 수 있지만 이런 사건에는 해당하지 않는다"고 지적했다.

피터스 장관은 한국에서도 이 사건이 큰 뉴스로 보도돼 '국가적 망신'으로 여겨지고 있는 만큼 A씨가 옳은 결정을 내려주기를 기대한다면서 "이 문제는 이제 최고위급까지 올라가 문재인 대통령도 알고 있는 사안이다. 기다리는 것 외에 더는 할 수 있는 건 없는 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.
