(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 인도양 섬나라 모리셔스가 최근 연안에서 좌초해 막대한 기름을 유출한 일본 화물선의 선장을 체포했다고 로이터통신이 18일(현지시간) 현지 경찰을 인용해 전했다.

시바 쿠덴 조사관은 로이터에 "사고 선박의 선장과 다른 선원을 체포했다. 그들은 법원 심사에서 보석이 거부돼 아직 구금돼 있다"고 말했다.

일본 화물선 '와카시오'호는 지난 7월 25일 좌초 사고로 1천t 이상의 연료(중유)를 유출해 천혜의 자연환경을 자랑하는 모리셔스 바다를 오염시켰다.

그동안 사고 원인과 관련해 선박이 와이파이(Wi-Fi) 접속을 위해 육지에 접근했다가 좌초했을 가능성이 제기됐다.

또 좌초 사고 직전에 승조원의 생일을 축하했다는 진술도 있었다고 일본 민영방송 네트워크인 ANN이 모리셔스 현지 언론을 인용해 보도한 바 있다.
