(천안=연합뉴스) 오예진 기자 = 이정옥 여성가족부 장관은 14일 '일본군 위안부 피해자 기림의 날'을 맞아 "위안부 (피해) 할머니들의 증언에 '의지의 기억'으로 화답하겠다"고 밝혔다.

이 장관은 이날 오전 충남 천안 국립망향의동산에서 열린 기림의날 기념식에 참석해 1991년 위안부 피해를 최초 고백한 김학순 할머니를 언급하며 "김학순 할머니의 증언은 역사의 시계를 돌리는 기폭제가 됐다"고 말했다.

이어 "'증언'은 짐작은 했지만 외면했던 진실, 전쟁이 여성에게 가하는 '폭력'을 적나라하게 드러낸 것"이라면서 "할머니의 증언은 국내외에서 수많은 응답을 만들어 냈다"고 평가했다.

그러면서 "할머니 자신도 소녀로 다시 태어났고 피해자에서 활동가로 변화했다"고 언급했다.

이 장관은 1992년부터 시작한 정기 수요집회를 거론하면서 "활동가가 된 할머니들은 전시 및 분쟁 하 성폭력 피해 일반에 공감을 불러일으켰다"고 말했다.

이어 "정부도 1993년부터 생활안정금을 지원해 왔다"면서 "남은 17분의 생활안정, 맞춤형 치료는 국가책임의 최소영역"이라고 강조했다.

이 장관은 아울러 "돌아가신 분은 물론 생존피해자들 중에 과거를 드러내고 싶지 않다는 요구를 하는 분들도 계시다"면서 "그분들의 존엄을 위해 마지막까지 지켜야 할 책무가 있다"고 말했다.

또 "이제는 숨을 고르고 역사의 비극 속에서 무엇을 건져낼지 고민해야 할 시기라고 생각한다"고 했다.

이 장관은 "영면하신 피해 할머니들께서도 영원한 안식을 누리시길 기원한다"는 말로 기념사를 맺었다.
