북아일랜드 평화협정 설계한 노벨 평화상 수상자 존 흄 별세

구교계 SDLP 대표로 폭력 대신 대화 통한 대타협 주장

치매로 수년간 앓다가 요양원에서 숨져…아일랜드·영국 정치지도자들 애도

(런던=연합뉴스) 박대한 특파원 = 1998년 체결된 벨파스트 평화협정(굿프라이데이 협정) 설계자로 노벨 평화상을 수상했던 존 흄 북아일랜드 사회민주노동당(SDLP) 전 대표가 3일(현지시간) 별세했다고 로이터 통신, BBC 방송이 보도했다. 향년 83세.

수년간 치매를 앓았던 흄 전 대표는 이날 오전 고향인 북아일랜드 런던데리의 한 요양원에서 숨을 거뒀다.

그의 가족은 성명을 통해 "존은 남편이자 아버지, 할아버지, 증조부이자 형제였다"면서 "그는 매우 사랑을 받았으며, 가족은 그의 부재를 매우 깊이 느끼게 될 것"이라고 밝혔다.

흄 전 대표는 벨파스트 평화협정의 산파 역할을 했다.

벨파스트 평화협정은 1998년 4월 10일 당시 토니 블레어 영국 총리와 버티 아언 아일랜드 총리의 중재로 북아일랜드 신·구교도 정파 사이에 체결된 평화 협정이다.

이 협정으로 아일랜드와의 통합을 주장해 온 구교계와 영국 잔류를 고수해 온 신교계 간에 1969년 이래 계속된 유혈분쟁이 종결됐다.

흄은 1970년 구교파 온건 정당인 SDLP 창설을 주도했으며, 1979년부터 2001년까지 대표를 맡았다.

그는 SDLP 대표로 선출된 이래 일관되게 "대화를 통한 대타협"을 주장하는 등 평화의 전도사 역할을 했다.

북아일랜드 구교도들이 폭탄과 총기를 버려야만 평화를 달성할 수 있다고 꾸준히 설득했다.

그는 비폭력 운동을 통해서만 영국으로부터 독립이라는 구교도들의 염원을 달성할 수 있다고 주장하면서, "진정으로 누군가를 설득하려면 계속해서 자신의 주장을 말로 전달하는 것 이외에 다른 방법은 없다"고 강조했다.

흄 전대표는 강경 노선을 추구한 북아일랜드공화군(IRA)의 정치조직인 신페인당(Sinn Fein)의 제리 애덤스 대표와 대화를 시작했고, 이것이 물꼬가 돼 1998년 벨파스트 평화협정으로 이어졌다.

이같은 공로로 같은 해 북아일랜드 자치정부 수반이자 얼스터연합당(UUP)의 대표인 데이비드 트림블과 노벨 평화상을 공동수상했다.

흄 전 대표의 별세 소식에 영국과 아일랜드의 정치지도자들은 한목소리로 애도를 표했다.

콜룸 이스트우드 SDLP 대표는 "존 흄의 죽음은 20세기 아일랜드의 가장 위대한 정치적 인물을 잃게 됐다는 것을 의미한다"고 밝혔다.

미홀 마틴 아일랜드 총리는 "그는 위대한 영웅이자 진정한 중재자"라고 평가했고, 북아일랜드 자치정부 수반인 민주연합당(DUP)의 알린 포스터 대표는 "아일랜드 민족주의의 거인"이라며 안타까움을 나타냈다.

토니 블레어 전 영국 총리는 "존 흄은 정치적 거인으로 미래가 과거와 똑같을 것이라는 믿음을 거부한 선지자"라며 "북아일랜드 평화에 대한 그의 공헌은 대단한 일로 계속 기억될 것"이라고 말했다.
