쿠팡·네이버쇼핑 양강구도 깬다…위메프, '빈선반 채우기' 도전

이커머스 시장 성장 이끈 원조업체…상품경쟁력 확대해 반격

(서울=연합뉴스) 김보경 기자 = 국내 이커머스(전자상거래) 시장이 쿠팡과 네이버쇼핑의 양강 구도로 재편되는 양상을 보이는 가운데 '원조' 이커머스 업체인 위메프가 상품경쟁력 강화 등을 통해 반격에 나섰다.

위메프는 판매상품 수와 상품 데이터베이스(DB)를 대폭 확대하는 '빈 선반 채우기' 프로젝트를 시작한다고 16일 밝혔다.

빈 선반 채우기란 파트너사를 확대해 기존 상품 수를 늘리고, 그동안 취급하지 못했던 신규상품을 발굴하는 프로젝트다. 위메프의 최대 강점인 가격경쟁력에 상품경쟁력을 더하겠다는 취지다.

소셜네트워킹서비스(SNS)를 기반으로 하는 소셜커머스 태생인 위메프는 상품 구색이 다른 경쟁사보다 미흡한 구조적 한계가 있었다.

위메프는 지난해 8월 오픈마켓(통신판매중개업) 전환 후 고객 이탈의 주요 원인이 상품 미비라는 점을 확인하고 이번 프로젝트를 준비했다.

앱 분석업체 와이즈앱에 따르면 지난 2010년 설립된 위메프는 지난해 가장 많이 결제된 온라인 서비스 5위를 차지한 '토종' 이커머스 업체다.

이에 따라 위메프는 5개 사업파트 아래 신규 상품과 파트너사를 발굴하는 영업조직을 각각 신설하고, 파트별로 상품기획자(MD)를 7~8명씩 배치했다.

영업조직에 배치된 MD들은 MD 업무인 파트너사 관리와 신규영업 가운데 신규영업만 맡아 전문성을 키우게 된다는 것이 회사의 설명이다.

위메프는 지난해 말 넥슨코리아와 IMM인베스트먼트로부터 투자받은 3천700억원도 이번 프로젝트에 대거 활용할 방침이다.

위메프 관계자는 "네이버 등 대형 플랫폼까지 이커머스 사업에 속도를 내면서 위메프가 판매상품 수나 상품 DB에서 더 열세에 놓였다"면서 "상품 구색 격차는 쇼핑 플랫폼 매력도가 직결되는 만큼 신규영업조직을 만들어 상품경쟁력을 강화하겠다"고 설명했다.

앞서 국내 최초 소셜커머스업체였던 티몬도 다른 업체보다 싸게 제품을 내놓는 초저가 정책의 경쟁이 치열해지자 시간대별 한정 판매를 하는 '타임커머스'를 지난해 처음 선보였다.

티몬은 타임커머스 전략에 힘입어 2010년 창사 이후 최초로 지난 3월 월 단위 영업흑자를 내기도 했다.

업계 관계자는 "이커머스 시장 성장을 이끌었던 원조업체들이 최근 쉬운 검색과 다양한 상품 구색을 내세운 신규 사업자에 밀리자 반격에 나선 셈"이라면서 "특히 함께 소셜커머스로 출발한 쿠팡이 신규 판매자 확보 등을 통해 급성장한 것이 자극됐을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
