대만 가오슝시장 보선서 '친중' 국민당 참패

집권 민진당, 2년만에 텃밭 탈환

(베이징=연합뉴스) 김윤구 특파원 = 중국과의 긴밀한 관계를 추구하는 대만 국민당이 15일 남부 가오슝(高雄) 시장 보궐선거에서 참패했다.

독립 성향의 집권 민진당 후보로 나선 천치마이(陳其邁) 전 행정원 부원장은 70%를 득표해 리메이전 국민당 후보를 압도했다고 로이터통신이 이날 보도했다.

이번 선거는 국민당 소속 한궈위(韓國瑜) 시장이 지난 6월 주민소환 투표에서 시장직을 잃은 뒤에 열렸다.

천 후보의 득표율은 가오슝 시장 선거 사상 최고였다. 선거 과정에서 석사 논문 표절이 드러나 사과했던 리 후보의 득표율은 25.9%에 그쳤다.

천 후보는 환호하는 지지자들에게 "이번 선거 결과는 민주주의의 승리"라고 말했다.

가오슝 시장 보선은 홍콩의 반중 신문 사주 지미 라이가 체포되고 중국군이 대만 인근에서 군사훈련으로 대만을 위협하는 가운데 이뤄졌다.

지난해 홍콩 시위 이후 대만에서 반중 정서는 점점 짙어지고 있다.

대만 최대의 항구도시 가오슝은 1970~1980년대 민주주의 운동의 중심으로 지난 20년간 민진당의 텃밭이었다.

그러나 무명에 가까웠던 한궈위가 2018년 지방선거에서 가오슝 시장으로 당선되는 이변을 일으키면서 국민당에 시장직이 넘어갔었다.

한 전 시장은 지난 1월 대만 총통선거에서 연임에 도전한 차이잉원(蔡英文) 후보에게 패했다.
