셀린 시아마 감독 성장 3부작의 시작 '워터 릴리스'

(서울=연합뉴스) 한미희 기자 = 칸 국제영화제와 골든 글로브 시상식에서 봉준호 감독의 '기생충'과 경쟁했던 셀린 시아마 감독의 '타오르는 여인의 초상'은 올해 초 국내에서 개봉해 14만명의 관객을 모았다.

하지만 팬덤은 14만명이라는 숫자보다 훨씬 뜨거웠고, 결국 시아마 감독 전작들의 국내 개봉을 끌어냈다.

2011년 작품인 '톰보이'가 지난 5월 관객을 만난 데 이어, 오는 13일에는 시아마 감독의 데뷔작인 '워터 릴리스'(2007)가 개봉한다. '워터 릴리스', '톰보이'에 이어 성장 3부작을 완성하는 '걸후드'(2014) 역시 오는 11월 개봉할 예정이다. 시아마 감독이 10여년 동안 만든 작품 네편이 올 한해 국내에서 모두 소개되는 셈이다.

'워터 릴리스'에서는 '타오르는 여인의 초상'의 귀족 아가씨 엘로이즈를 연기한 아델 에넬의 앳된 모습을 만날 수 있어 팬에게는 더 반가울 수 있겠다.

'워터 릴리스'는 각기 다른 몸, 다른 욕망을 가진 소녀들이 겪어내는 성장통을 그린 작품이다.

마리(폴린 아콰르)는 수중 발레를 하는 친구 안나(루이즈 블라쉬르) 때문에 억지로 갔던 수영장에서 다른 수중 발레팀 주장인 플로리안(아델 에넬)을 보고 한눈에 반한다. 어떻게 다가가야 할지 모르는 마리는 그저 플로리안을 졸졸 따라다닌다. 남자애들의 시선과 여자애들의 질투를 한 몸에 받는 플로리안은 수영장에만 들여보내 주면 뭐든 하겠다는 마리를 이용해 집에서 허락을 받고 마리를 길에 세워둔 채 남자를 만나러 간다.

안나는 수중 발레 대회가 끝나고 수영장 대기실에서 우연히 마주친 수영부 남자애 프랑수아와 첫 키스를 하기로 마음먹고 돌진한다. 무작정 다가오는 마리를 이용하는 것 같던 플로리안은 어느새 마리에게 마음을 터놓고 친구가 되는 듯하지만, 둘의 마음은 다시 엇갈린다. 혼자 남은 안나는 가장 통쾌하고 귀여운 반전을 선사한다.

영화는 이제 막 성장하기 시작한 소녀들의 몸을 있는 그대로 카메라에 담는다. 그 시선은 보는 이의 욕망을 따라가는 것이 아니라, 소녀들의 욕망을 드러낸다.

소녀들은 걸음걸이에서 아직 어린애 태를 벗지 못했지만, 빼빼 마르기만 했든, 어른의 몸에 가까워졌든, 조금 뚱뚱해서 입고 싶은 바지 단추를 채울 수 없든, 다른 몸만큼이나 각기 다른 자신의 욕망을 좌충우돌하며 찾아 나간다.

수영장 밖에서 플로리안이 팀 연습을 하는 모습을 지켜보던 마리는 '물속에서 더 잘 보인다'는 플로리안의 말을 듣고 물속으로 들어가 잠시도 쉬지 않고 움직이는 소녀들의 다리를 보게 된다.

물 밖에서는 거친 호흡으로 박자를 맞추는 구호와 팔 동작으로 첨벙거리는 물소리가, 물속에서는 물이 귀를 막고 전해져 오는 소리가 뻔한 음악을 대신하는데 펄떡이는 소녀들의 욕망만큼이나 거침없고 생생하다.

35㎜ 프린트 필름으로 촬영한 영화는 개봉과 이후 해외 영화제, 기획전에서 필름으로 상영되었으나, 국내에서 처음으로 디지털 버전으로 상영한다.
