(서울=연합뉴스) 김기훈 기자 = 지난해 보행 중 교통사고 사망자의 절반 이상은 65세 이상 노인으로 나타났다.

14일 한국교통안전공단에 따르면 지난해 보행 중 교통사고 사망자는 1천302명으로 전년보다 12.4%(185명) 감소했다.

연령별로 보면 65세 이상이 743명으로 57.1%를 차지했다. 특히 65세 이상 사망자 중 78.5%(583명)가 71세 이상으로 조사됐다.

보행 중 교통사고 사망자를 지역별로 보면 경기가 253명으로 가장 많았다. 이어 서울(144명), 경남(114) 등 순이었다.

울산은 전년보다 사망자가 46.9% 줄었으나, 강원(30.6%)과 충북(16.9%)은 되레 증가세를 보였다.

또 인구 10만명당 보행 중 사망자는 평균 2.51명, 65세 이상 인구의 경우는 9.26명으로, 경제협력개발기구(OECD)의 평균(1.0명)과 비교하면 심각한 수준으로 나타났다.

공단은 고령 보행자의 사고 예방을 위해 올 하반기에 전국 노인사고 다발 지점 50곳을 대상으로 '횡단안전도 실태조사'를 실시해 위험 요인을 파악하고 맞춤형 대책을 마련할 예정이다.
