(테헤란=연합뉴스) 강훈상 특파원 = 무스타파 알카드히미 이라크 총리는 내년 6월 6일 조기 총선을 실시하겠다고 지난달 31일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

알카드히미 대통령은 조기 총선을 성공적으로 치르기 위해 만반의 준비를 하겠다면서 이 약속을 지키겠다는 의지를 강조했다.

애초 이라크의 총선은 2022년 5월로 예정됐던 만큼 1년 정도 일찍 총선을 치르게 되는 셈이다.

이라크에서는 지난해 10월 시작한 반정부·반부패 시위에서 조기 총선을 실시해 정치 기득권과 무능한 정부를 개혁해야 한다는 여론이 높아졌다.

알카드히미 총리는 올해 5월 취임하면서 반정부 시위에서 표출된 국민적 여론을 수용하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

2018년 5월 치러진 총선에서는 처음 도입한 전자 투·개표 시스템의 신뢰성에 의문이 제기됐고 유권자 등록, 신분 확인 과정도 허술해 선거 절차가 공정하지 못했다는 비판을 받았다.
