(광주=연합뉴스) 천정인 기자 = 5·18 사적지인 광주 동구 상무관에 전시된 예술작품 '검은 비' 철거를 앞두고 논란이 되고 있다.

3일 5·18기념재단과 광주시 등에 따르면 독일을 무대로 활동하는 정영창 작가의 작품인 검은 비는 2018년 5·18 38주년 특별전을 위해 상무관에 설치된 이후 지금까지 전시를 이어오고 있다.

이 작품은 5·18 당시 희생자의 주검을 수습한 상무관 전시를 목적으로 한 장소 특정작품이다.

그러나 광주시와 국립아시아문화전당 측은 옛 전남도청 원형 복원의 일환인 상무관 복원 공사를 위해 지난달 말까지 전시물 이전이 필요하다는 입장을 전했다.

정 작가는 이 작품을 광주시나 국립아시아문화전당에 기증하겠다는 의사를 밝혔지만 두 기관은 전시하거나 보관할 적당한 장소가 없어 난색을 보인 것으로 알려졌다.

이를 두고 5월 단체는 "작품을 전시·보존하라"고 촉구했다.

5·18기념재단과 5월 3단체(유족회·부상자회·구속부상자회)는 이날 성명을 내고 "수많은 5·18민주화운동 희생자들을 기리는 작품의 의미를 생각하면 전시가 끝났다고 무참하게 용도 폐기하는 것은 너무도 참혹한 처사"라며 "작품을 보존해야 한다"고 요구했다.

반면 광주시 관계자는 "작품의 규모가 방대해 보관할 수 있는 공간이나 이전 설치를 위한 대체 장소 확보가 어렵다"며 "인수할 수 없는 불가피한 상황"이라고 설명했다.
