500년전 사망한 르네상스 천재화가 라파엘로 얼굴 3D로 복원

(로마=연합뉴스) 전성훈 특파원 = 르네상스 시대 천재 화가 라파엘로 산치오 다 우르비노(1483∼1520)의 생김새가 현대 기술로 생생하게 되살아났다.

7일(현지시간) 일간 라 레푸블리카 등 현지 언론에 따르면 이탈리아 로마에 있는 토르베르가타대학 연구팀은 최근 3D를 활용해 라파엘로의 얼굴 묘사를 완성했다.

이번 작업은 1833년 로마 판테온에서 발굴된 두개골을 본뜬 석고상을 토대로 이뤄졌다.

당시 출토된 두개골은 라파엘로의 것으로 추정되긴 했으나 누구도 그의 것이라고 확신하지는 못하는 상태였다.

연구팀은 복원된 3D 그림을 라파엘로가 직접 그린 자화상 및 다른 화가의 라파엘로 초상화 등과 비교·분석했고 서로 일치한다는 결론에 도달했다.

분자 인류학에서 세계 최고의 권위를 인정받는 연구팀의 올가 리카르즈 교수는 "1833년 판테온에서 나온 유해가 실제 라파엘로의 것이라는 것을 입증하는 최초의 사례"라고 의미를 부여했다.

연구에 참여한 마티아 팔코니 교수도 AFP 통신에 "3D로 라파엘로 실제 얼굴의 80% 정도만 담아냈을 뿐이지만 그 결과에 의심의 여지는 없다"고 자평했다.

3D로 복원된 생김새를 토대로 라파엘로 자화상의 정확성을 판단해보면 라파엘로가 자신의 눈과 입은 비교적 정확하게 묘사했으나 코는 실제보다 다소 미화한 측면이 있다고 연구팀은 전했다.

연구팀은 라파엘로 유해를 토대로 머리·눈동자 색깔을 특정하는 작업도 진행할 예정이다.

'아테네 학당'으로 유명한 라파엘로는 레오나르도 다빈치, 미켈란젤로 등과 함께 이탈리아 르네상스의 전성기를 이끈 3대 거장으로 꼽힌다.

그의 무덤은 수많은 관광객이 찾는 로마의 명소 판테온 안에 있다.

이탈리아에서는 올해 라파엘로 사후 500주기를 맞아 기념 전시회 등 다양한 행사를 마련해 선보이고 있다.
