코로나 속 40년 만에 다시 구속된 이만희…신천지 최대 위기

1980년 명예훼손 혐의 구속 경험…신도 이탈 전망 속 내부 결집 나설 듯

(서울=연합뉴스) 양정우 기자 = 신천지예수교 증거장막성전(신천지)의 이만희(89) 총회장이 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 방역을 방해한 혐의 등으로 1일 검찰에 구속되면서 이단 논란 속에도 교세가 급성장해온 신천지가 창립 36년 만에 최대 위기를 맞게 됐다.

이 총회장이 받는 범죄 혐의는 크게 두 가지다. 코로나19가 창궐하기 시작한 지난 2월 신천지 간부들과 공모해 방역 당국에 신도 명단과 집회 장소를 축소해 보고한 혐의다. 다른 하나는 50억대 교회 자금을 횡령해 가평 평화의 궁전을 건축하거나 개인 계좌로 빼돌린 혐의다.

하지만 이 총회장 측은 방역 당국의 과도한 개인정보 요구에 우려를 표했을 뿐 방역 방해를 목적으로 명단 누락 등을 지시한 적이 없다며 혐의를 부인하고 있다. 오히려 성도들에게 협조를 지시했다고 반박하고 있다.

횡령 혐의와 관련해서도 개인 돈을 쓴 것일 뿐 교회 자금 횡령과 무관하다는 입장을 보이는 것으로 전해졌다.

이 총회장이 사법당국에 구속된 것은 1980년 이후 40년 만이다.

교계에 따르면 이씨는 신천지를 창립하기 전인 1980년 한때 자신이 몸담았던 대한기독교장막성전의 교주 유재열을 비판하다 명예훼손 혐의로 구속됐다. 그는 이듬해 풀려난 뒤 1984년 3월 신천지를 창립했다.

이 총회장은 전날 있었던 구속 전 피의자 심문(영장실질심사)에서 고령과 지병을 호소했으나 받아들여지지 않았다.

그는 심장에 이상 증세가 있으며, 과거 허리 수술 등으로 인해 다리까지 불편하다는 게 신천지 측 설명이다.

신천지는 이 총회장을 정점으로 경기 과천 총회의 총무와 24개 부서장, 전국 지역별 본부로 볼 수 있는 12개 지파의 지파장에 의해 운영되는 구조를 취한다.

총회 총무와 24개 부서장의 선임인 내무부장이 지난달 28일 구속기소 된 데다 이 총회장마저 구속되며 당분간 지도부 공백은 불가피할 것으로 보인다.

현재 신천지에서는 총회 전도부장을 중심으로 대행체제를 꾸려 일련의 상황에 대응하는 것으로 전해졌다.

신천지에서는 코로나19 장기화 속에도 신도 이탈이 수천 명에 불과하고 내부 동요도 없다고 밝히고 있으나 외부에서는 상반된 주장이 나온다. 매년 수만명 가량 교회로 편입되는 교육생은 물론 신도 이탈 규모가 상당하다는 것이다.

유튜브 '종말론사무소' 계정을 운영하며 신천지 실상 알리기에 집중해온 윤재덕 소장은 지난달 30일 게시한 영상에서 "교육생은 80% 이상 떨어져 나간 것으로 보이고, 몇몇 지파들을 통해 보니 신천지가 30∼40%의 인구 감소가 있는 것으로 추산하고 있다"고 주장한 바 있다.

이런 가운데 이 총회장 구속 상황을 맞은 신천지가 혼란스러울 수밖에 없는 신도들의 결집에 적극 나설 것이라는 전망이 나온다.

교계 언론인 바른미디어는 이날 신천지가 '피해자 코스프레'를 통한 신도 결집에 나설 것으로 보면서 이 총회장을 '고난받는 종'으로 묘사해 신도들에게 일종의 죄책감을 갖게 하는 전략을 펼 것으로 예상했다.
