(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 서아프리카 모리타니와 서사하라 사이 앞바다에서 이주민들을 실은 배가 뒤집히면서 최소 27명이 사망했다고 AP통신이 유엔 기구들을 인용해 7일(현지시간) 보도했다.

당초 사고가 난 6일에는 40여명이 숨진 것으로 알려졌었다.

이주 및 난민을 위한 유엔 기구들은 모리타니 해안경비대가 구조작업에서 생존자 1명을 발견해 누아디부로 데려왔다고 말했다.

국제이주기구(IOM)의 모리타니 지부장인 로라 룽가로티는 "신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)으로 인한 제약에도 불구하고 이주민들은 여전히 위험한 여행을 할 수밖에 없다"고 말했다.

사고 선박은 서사하라 다클라를 수일 전에 떠났으며 스페인령 카나리 제도를 향하고 있었다고 유엔 기구들이 전했다.

배는 엔진 고장으로 표류했으며 탑승자들은 탈수증으로 고통받았다.

배에 타고 있던 사람들 대부분은 사하라 이남 아프리카 출신들이었다.

모리타니 앞바다에서는 이주민들이 다른 루트를 이용하기 전인 2005∼2010년 수천 명이 카나리 제도를 가려다가 해난 사고로 숨졌다.

지난해 12월에도 이주민을 실은 배가 뒤집혀 63명이 숨졌고 올해도 다른 사람들이 이 루트에서 숨지거나 실종됐다.
