'가자 영국으로'…영불해협 밀입국 시도 사상 최대 하루 235명

영국, 프랑스에 강화 조치 촉구…해군 함정 등 파견 가능성도

(런던=연합뉴스) 박대한 특파원 = 영불해협을 건너 영국에 밀입국하려는 이민자가 하루 기준으로 사상 최대를 기록했다.

7일(현지시간) AP 통신에 따르면 전날 17척의 배에 나눠탄 235명이 프랑스에서 영불해협을 건너 영국으로 밀입국을 시도하다가 적발됐다.

이는 일 기준 사상 최대로, 1주일 전 기록했던 202명을 뛰어넘은 것이다.

아프리카와 중동 등의 이민자들은 그동안 영국으로 건너가기 위해 칼레 등 프랑스 북부 지역을 이용해왔다.

신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산 이전에는 영불해협을 건너는 페리나 화물트럭 등을 주로 밀입국에 활용했다.

그러나 팬데믹(코로나19)으로 인한 물동량 축소 등으로 이용 기회가 줄어들자 소형보트나 카약 등을 통해 직접 영불해협 횡단을 시도하는 경우가 급증하고 있다.

영불해협은 가장 좁은 곳의 폭이 20.7 마일(약 33.3km) 정도인 데다, 최근 화창한 여름 날씨가 이어지고 있는 점도 위험을 무릅쓰는 요인이 되고 있다.

영국 정부는 프랑스 정부가 영불해협 횡단을 시도하는 이들의 단속을 강화해야 한다는 입장이다.

아울러 프랑스는 안전한 나라인 만큼 굳이 영국으로 건너올 필요가 없다는 점을 강조하고 있다.

앞서 지난달 프리티 파텔 영국 내무장관과 제랄드 다르마냉 프랑스 내무장관은 불법 밀입국 시도를 적발하기 위해 공동의 정보조직을 설립하기로 합의했다.

파텔 장관은 이같은 비도덕적인 밀입국 시도에 범죄조직이 관련돼 있다고 지적했다.

영국 정부는 다음 주 크리스 필립 내무부 정무차관이 프랑스를 방문해 불법 밀입국 시도를 막기 위해 필요한 추가 조치를 논의할 것이라고 밝혔다.

정치권에서는 해군 함정 등을 영불해협에 파견해야 한다는 목소리가 나오고 있지만 정부는 아직 입장을 확정하지 못한 것으로 전해졌다.
