주산업 관광 재개는 과제…"공항 재개 시점 등 고심"

(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 우리나라에도 신혼여행지로 잘 알려진 인도양 섬나라 모리셔스가 아프리카에서 처음으로 코로나바이러스를 통제한 나라가 됐지만, 주산업인 관광 재개 문제는 여전히 과제라고 블룸버그통신이 6일(현지시간) 보도했다.

모리셔스의 방역 성공 사례는 아프리카 대륙 내 이동제한 완화에 따라 케냐에서 남아프리카공화국까지 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 창궐하는 상황에서 독특하다.

모리셔스는 세계에서 3개월 이상 지역사회 감염이 일어나지 않은 소수 국가 중 하나이다.

지난 4월 27일 마지막 코로나19 사망자가 발생한 이후 전체 감염자 수는 단지 344명에 머물고 있다.

블룸버그는 인구 130만명인 모리셔스의 성공 요인으로 한국이 첫 번째 발병에 대처한 방식을 채택한 것을 꼽았다.

강력한 중앙정부의 지휘와 탄탄한 재정 뒷받침이 된 보건 시스템, 광범위한 검사 및 접촉자 추적과 격리 수단을 결합한 방지 전략 등이 그것이다.

모리셔스 정부는 1월 중국발 여행객에 대한 격리를 요청한 첫 번째 나라 가운데 하나였다.

덕분에 5월까지 질병을 통제했고 사망자도 10명에 그쳤다. 21만5천명 이상이 검사를 받아 아프리카에서 인구당 가장 높은 검진율을 기록했다.

세계보건기구(WHO)의 모리셔스 대표인 로랑 무상고는 "모리셔스 정부가 대단히 잘 해냈다"고 말했다. 과거 식민모국 영국에서조차 전문가들이 중구난방이었지만 모리셔스는 고위급 바이러스 대책위원회를 꾸려 일관되고 효율적인 대처를 했다는 평가도 나온다.

그러나 모리셔스는 전체 고용의 5분의 1을 차지할 정도로 관광업 의존도가 심해 정부가 공항 재개 시점 등을 놓고 고심하고 있다.

카리브해 휴양지인 바하마 제도가 7월에 관광객에게 개방한 이후 감염이 급증한 사례도 있기 때문이다.

닐렌 벤카다스미 모리셔스 관광진흥청장은 "해결책을 찾기 위해 열심히 작업하고 있다"면서 "아마도 단계적으로 (개방을) 하면서 코로나19 안전 여행지라는 명성을 유지하고 싶다"고 말했다.

현재 검토 중인 방안으로는 관광객을 체류 기간에 따라 분류하는 것으로, 일주일 동안 여행 오는 사람은 리조트 안에 머무는 것으로 장소가 국한될 수 있다.
