미국 코로나19, 중서부 확산 우려…파우치 "새 국면" 진단

중서부, 지난주 가장 많이 증가…"통제 힘든 지역사회 전파로 바뀌어"

(샌프란시스코=연합뉴스) 정성호 특파원 = 미국에서 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 중부 내륙으로 번지고 있다는 우려가 나왔다.

일간 워싱턴포스트(WP)는 3일(현지시간) 미주리·몬태나·오클라호마 등 일부 중서부 주(州)들에서 지난주 미국에서 코로나19 감염자가 가장 많이 증가한 것으로 나타났다고 보도했다.

캘리포니아·플로리다·텍사스주 등 선벨트(캘리포니아 남부에서 사우스캐롤라이나까지 띠 모양으로 이어지는 미국 남부의 일조량이 많은 지역) 일대 재확산 지역의 확산세가 주춤한 가운데 중서부가 새 핫스폿(집중발병 지역)으로 떠오르는 셈이다.

또 인구 대비 신규 감염자 수에서는 플로리다·미시시피·앨라배마 주가 앞서나가며 다른 주들을 앞지르고 있다.

누적 환자가 50만명을 넘긴 캘리포니아주에서는 이날 5천739명의 신규 환자가 나오며 총 환자 수가 51만4천901명으로 증가했다.

플로리다주에서는 4천716명의 신규 환자가 발생하며 누적 환자가 49만1천884명으로 늘었다. 사망자도 73명이 새로 나왔다.

일리노이주에서는 이날 1천298명의 신규 환자가 보고되며 13일 연속으로 신규 환자가 1천명을 넘겼다. 누적 환자는 18만3천241명으로 올라갔다.

이런 가운데 앤서니 파우치 미국 국립알레르기·전염병연구소 소장은 이날 미국의 코로나19 팬데믹(세계적 대유행)이 "새로운 국면"에 들어섰다고 진단했다.

파우치 소장과 함께 백악관 코로나19 태스크포스(TF) 일원인 데비 벅스 조정관이 전날 발언한 '새로운 국면'은 지역사회 확산이 일어나고 있는 곳을 가리킨다며 벅스 조정관의 진단을 뒷받침한 것이다.

파우치 소장은 "지역사회 전파가 일어나면 이를 통제하기가 훨씬 더 어렵다"고 말했다.

파우치 소장은 예컨대 요양시설이나 육류 처리공장, 교도소 등에서 코로나19가 발생하면 상대가 누구인지 알고 거기 들어가 전염을 억제할 수 있지만 "지역사회 감염이 발생하면 이는 은밀하다"고 진단했다.

이어 "(지역사회 전파에서는) 증상은 전혀 없으면서 병을 전파하는 사람들이 있다"며 "(환자를) 파악하고 격리하고 환자의 접촉자를 추적하기가 어렵다"고 말했다.

파우치 소장은 이런 무증상 감염이 지역사회 전파를 유발하는 주요 요소라고 말했다.

미국 존스홉킨스대학은 이날 오후 미국의 코로나19 확진자 수를 471만2천305명, 사망자 수를 15만5천379명으로 각각 집계했다.
