독학한 사진 기술로 524명 촬영…"요양병원 돌며 봉사하고 싶어"

사장 김영훈(50)씨는 코끝에 간신이 걸쳐놓은 안경 너머로 모니터를 응시한 채 장수 사진을 보정하느라 여념이 없었다.

마우스가 빠른 속도로 움직이는가 싶더니 화면 속 인물의 얼굴에선 깊게 팬 주름이 사라지고 검버섯은 뽀얗게 변했다. 얼굴은 마치 타임머신을 탄 듯 10년 전쯤으로 되돌아갔다.

김씨는 사진을 받고 난 어르신이 아이처럼 기뻐할 모습을 떠올리며 흐뭇한 표정으로 작업을 이어갔다.

"동네 어르신들은 내 부모님은 아니지만, 어찌 보면 우리 모두의 부모님이라고 생각해요. 그분들이 없었다면 지금의 나, 우리가 있을 수 있었을까요. 어르신들에게 항상 감사한 마음으로 봉사하고 있습니다."

'송북동 효자'로 불리는 그가 사진 봉사를 시작한 건 2002년부터다.

장애인 시설을 찾아 봉사활동을 하면서 고등학교 때부터 독학해 익히고, 평생교육원을 다니며 공부한 사진 기술을 활용해 각종 행사 사진, 가족사진, 장수 사진을 찍어 주기 시작한 것이 벌써 18년이나 됐다.

그러던 중 생각했던 것보다 많은 어르신이 돌아가실 때 영정 한장이 없는 걸 보고 2018년부터는 장수 사진 봉사에 전념하게 됐다고 한다.

그가 지금까지 장수 사진을 찍어준 어르신만 무려 524명에 달한다.

정기적으로 장소를 빌려 어르신들을 초청해 장수 사진을 찍은 뒤 보정해 액자에 넣어 전달하는 게 그의 일이다.

액자값은 평택시 자원봉사센터와 바르게살기운동 송북동위원회가 지원하고 있다.

최근 그는 소박한 목표가 하나 생겼다고 한다.

지금은 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태로 할 수 없는 일이지만, 감염병이 잦아들면 요양병원을 돌며 어르신들 장수 사진을 찍어 드리고 싶다는 것이다.

이런 계획을 갖게 된 이유라며 김씨는 얼마 전 봉사활동 현장에서 만난 80대 할머니의 사연을 소개했다.

처음 보는 할머니 한 분이 머뭇거리면서 다가오더니 "영정으로 쓸 수 있게 확대해줄 수 있느냐"며 수십 년 전 찍은 증명사진 한장을 건넸다.

김씨는 다시 찍어 드리겠다고 했지만, 할머니는 "내 사진이 아니고, 오늘내일하시는 100세 넘은 시어머니가 병상에서 움직이질 못하셔서 갖고 왔다"고 했다.

할머니의 이야기를 듣고 난 김씨는 '정작 장수 사진이 급하신 분들은 요양병원에 많이 계시겠구나'라는 생각을 하게 됐다.

김씨는 "물질적으로 무언가 해드리고 싶어도 그럴 수 없다 보니 사진을 찍어드리게 됐다"며 "신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태가 잠잠해지면 꼭 요양병원을 돌며 봉사하고 싶다"고 말했다.

이어 "어쩌면 봉사란 누구나 할 수 있는데도 관심이 없어 하지 못하는 것 같다"며 "좀 더 많은 사람이 봉사에 관심을 가져줬으면 한다"고 덧붙였다.
