(춘천=연합뉴스) 이재현 이상학 박영서 기자 = 춘천 의암댐에서 전복된 선박 3척 중 경찰정에 탑승한 실종자들의 사연이 알려져 안타까움을 더하고 있다.

의암호 경찰 순찰정인 '강원 101호'에는 베테랑 경찰관 이모(55) 경위와 50일 전 아내의 출산으로 특별 휴가 중이던 춘천시청 이모(32) 주무관 등 2명이 타고 있었다.

◇ "선박 운영에 관해서는 원칙주의자"…해기사 자격 갖춘 베테랑 경찰관

이 경위는 아내와 장성한 두 아들을 남긴 채 실종됐다.

1998년부터 소양강과 의암호 등지에서 경찰 순찰정 승선 업무를 시작해 잔뼈가 굵은 베테랑 이 경위는 동료에게 신망이 두터우면서도 선박 운영에 관해서는 원칙주의자였다.

그는 경찰 순찰정 업무를 전문적으로 하기 위해 해기사(소형선박 조종사) 면허까지 취득했다.

관내 순찰정을 몰 수 있는 자격증을 가진 몇 안 되는 경찰관인 그는 7∼8년 전부터 줄곧 소양강과 의암호를 오가면서 경찰 순찰정장 임무를 수행했다.

소양호 경찰 순찰정인 '강원 102호'를 조종하는 동료 경찰 유모 경위는 "이 경위가 휴가 등 업무 공백이 생기면 내가 관련 업무를 보완하는 역할을 해왔다"며 "휴가 중 참사 소식을 접해 너무 가슴이 아프다"고 말했다.

이어 "이 경위는 따뜻한 마음을 가진 믿음직한 형님이었고 선박 운영에 관해서는 철저한 원칙주의자"라며 "폭우가 쏟아지고 부유물이 둥둥 떠다니는 위험천만한 의암호에 출동한 이유를 모르겠다"고 말을 잇지 못했다.

의암호 전복 추정 선박

어제까지 함께 일했던 동료가 실종됐다는 소식을 접한 춘천경찰서 서부지구대의 분위기도 침울하기만 했다.

오이흥 서부지구대장은 "아침에 출근해 인사를 나눴는데…"라며 "지금이라도 구조됐다는 소식을 애타게 기다리고 있다"며 말을 아꼈다.

이 경위의 지인 A(65)씨도 "배려심도 깊고, 누가 아프면 들여다보고, 경조사도 하나도 안 빠지고 챙길 정도로 나무랄 데가 없는 사람"이라며 안타까워했다.

소양댐에서 근무하던 이 경위가 지난해 3월 의암댐으로 근무지를 옮긴 뒤 "언제 다시 오냐"고 물으면 "2년 금방 가죠"라며 넉살도 좋았다고 했다.

이 경위는 휴무인 수요일마다 선장이나 주변 상인들과 점심을 자주 먹었고, 어제도 어김없이 A씨에게 전화해 점심을 먹자고 했다고 한다.

A씨는 "요새 소양댐에 물난리 났는데 무슨 점심 먹냐고, 너 내일 일하게 되면 배도 끌지 말고, 운동도 하지 말라고 신신당부했는데 이런 일이 나 마음이 너무 아프다"고 말했다.

이어 "너무 착하고 좋은 사람이어서 의암댐이나 소양댐에 있는 선장들도 모두 마음 아파할 것"이라며 살아 돌아오기를 바랐다.

이날 사고 소식을 듣고 의암댐을 찾은 아내는 사고 충격에 병원에 실려 간 것으로 알려졌다.

춘천시 남면 서천리 경강교 인근 긴급구조본부를 찾은 이 경위의 가족들은 "소양댐 수문을 개방했는데 경찰 지원을 내보내는 건 자살행위나 다름없지 않느냐"며 분통을 터뜨렸다.

◇ 50일 전 태어난 자녀와 아내 두고 실종된 30대 시청 주무관…특별휴가 중 사고

이 경위와 함께 강원 101호에 탑승한 춘천시청 이모(32) 주무관은 50일 전 태어난 자녀와 아내를 두고 실종됐다.

2018년 9월 공직에 입문한 이 주무관은 공직 입문과 함께 평생 배필인 공무원 아내를 만났다.

불과 50여일 전 아내의 출산으로 특별휴가를 받은 그는 지난 5일부터 오는 15일까지 10일간 휴가 중이었다.

그러나 이날 많은 비로 떠내려가는 수초섬 현장을 찾았던 것으로 알려졌다.

이병철 춘천시 교통환경국장은 "자신이 맡은 일을 남에게 넘기지 않고, 예의도 바르고, 직장 동료들과 우애도 깊고, 이 주무관은 요즘 젊은이 같지 않았다"고 안타까워했다.

의암호의 옛 중도 선착장 인근에 정박해 놓은 인공 수초섬이 급류에 유실되는 과정에서 선박 3척이 전복되는 대형 참사가 발생하자 춘천시도 충격에 휩싸였다.

행정선에 탄 춘천시청 소속 기간제 근로자 5명 중 1명은 숨지고 1명은 구조됐다.

나머지 3명은 아직 발견되지 않았다. 춘천시 동료 공무원들은 실낱같은 희망을 버리지 않은 채 수색구조 과정을 노심초사 지켜보며 실종자들이 하루빨리 살아 돌아오기를 간절히 기도하고 있다.
