(서울=연합뉴스) 하채림 기자 = 미국계 생명보험사가 출시한 종신보험의 단정적 상품명에 소비자단체뿐만 아니라 업계에서도 '과도하다'는 반응이 나오고 있다.

논란이 되는 상품은 4일 메트라이프생명이 출시한 '(무) 100% 만족하는 달러종신보험(저해지환급금형)'이다.

일반적으로 종신보험은 장기간 완납하면 상대적으로 높은 보험금을 보장받지만, 중도 해지하면 보험료 원금에 훨씬 못 미치는 돈만 돌려주기 때문에 '불완전판매' 민원이 많이 발생하는 편이다.

메트라이프의 새 상품은 보험료를 완납하면 원금(기본보험료)의 100%를 환급하며, 납부 기간에 따른 환급률을 소비자가 이해하기 쉽게 직관적으로 설정했다는 게 회사 쪽 설명이다.

메트라이프 관계자는 "'100% 만족'은 추상적 표현"이라며 "'퍼펙트' 같은 상품명도 통용되지 않으냐"고 반문했다.

그러나 소비자단체는 상품명 규제·심사가 완화된 것을 활용한 과장광고성 명칭이라고 지적했다.

조연행 금융소비자연맹 회장은 "보험 안내문(광고) 규정은 '제일', '최고' 같은 최상급 표현을 제한하지만 상품명에는 그러한 제약이 없는 것을 노린 표현으로 보인다"며 "'100% 만족하는 보험'이라는 것은 소비자를 오도할 수 있는 일방적 주장"이라고 평가했다.

당국 규제에 부정적인 업계조차 '지나치다'는 반응을 나타냈다.

업계 관계자는 "요즈음 튀는 상품명이 많아졌지만 저런 표현은 무리수"라며 고개를 내저었다.

보험 신상품은 기존 상품과 설계·약관에 큰 차이가 없다면 '자율상품'으로 분류돼 금융당국의 심사 대상이 아니다.

(무)100% 만족하는 달러종신보험도 자율상품에 해당해 금융감독원의 심의를 받지 않았다.

금감원 관계자는 "상품명의 기본 요건만 갖추면 재량권을 폭넓게 인정하는 편이지만, '100% 만족하는'이라는 표현은 적정성을 검토할 필요가 있어 보인다"고 말했다.

감독당국은 상품명이 과장광고성이거나 소비자를 오도할 우려가 있다고 결론을 내리면 업계에 변경 권고를 통보한다. 변경 권고를 받는 보험사는 대체로 권고를 수용하는 편이다.

이 관계자는 "최근 보험 상품명이 과도하다는 의견이 있어서 사례들을 살피고 있다"며 "개선이 필요하다고 판단하는 부분은 업계에 의견을 전달할 것"이라고 설명했다.
