(제네바=연합뉴스) 임은진 특파원 = 세계보건기구(WHO)는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)의 확산을 막기 위해 젊은이들의 주의를 다시 한번 당부했다.

테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스 WHO 사무총장은 30일(현지시간) 스위스 제네바 WHO 본부에서 열린 화상 언론 브리핑에서 "증거에 따르면 여름철 경계를 늦춘 젊은이들이 몇몇 국가에서 (확진자 수) 급증을 부분적으로 이끌고 있다"면서 이같이 말했다.

그는 코로나19를 통제하는 데 있어 가장 큰 도전 과제 중 하나가 "젊은 사람을 설득하는 것"이라고 지적했다.

그러면서 "젊은 사람도 감염될 수 있고 죽을 수 있으며 바이러스를 전염시킬 수 있다"면서 "이전에도 말했지만 젊은이들은 천하무적이 아니다"라고 강조했다.

배석한 마리아 판케르크호버 WHO 신종질병팀장도 나이트클럽이 바이러스 전파의 증폭기가 됐다고 우려했다.

그는 "젊은 사람의 대부분은 경증을 앓는 경향이 있지만, 항상 그런 것은 아니다"라며 젊은이들의 주의를 강조했다.
