(워싱턴·선양=연합뉴스) 임주영 차병섭 특파원 = 미국과 중국이 영사관 폐쇄 사태로 한층 더 증폭된 갈등 속에 가시 돋친 설전을 이어갔다.

AP통신에 따르면 마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관은 23일(현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아주 요바린다의 닉슨도서관에서 '중국 공산당과 자유 세계의 미래'를 주제로 한 연설에서 시진핑 중국 국가주석을 직접 비판했다.

폼페이오 장관은 "시진핑 주석은 파산한 전체주의 이데올로기의 진정한 신봉자"라고 말했다.

그는 "오늘날 중국은 자국 내에서는 점점 더 권위주의적이고, 다른 곳에서는 자유에 대한 적대감을 더욱 적극적으로 드러내고 있다"며 "자유 세계가 공산주의 중국을 바꾸지 않는다면 공산주의 중국이 우리를 바꿀 것"이라고 말했다.

폼페이오 장관은 미국의 그간 대중국 정책과 관련해서는 중국을 맹목적으로 포용하는 낡은 패러다임은 실패했다며 "그것을 계속해서는 안 된다. 그것으로 되돌아가서는 안 된다"고 강조했다.

폼페이오 장관의 이 같은 연설은 미국이 텍사스주 휴스턴에 있는 중국 총영사관에 폐쇄를 요구한 뒤 미국과 중국의 갈등이 격화한 뒤에 나왔다.

중국 외교부 화춘잉(華春瑩) 대변인은 자신의 트위터 계정을 통해 폼페이오 국무장관의 연설을 노골적으로 비판했다.

화 대변인은 "폼페이오 국무장관이 자신을 21세기 존 포스터 덜레스로 만들고 싶어한다는 걸 보여준다"면서 "세계화한 세상에서 중국을 상대로 새로운 십자군 원정을 하려 한다"고 밝혔다.

덜레스는 미국과 구소련의 냉전 초기인 1953~1959년 미국 국무장관을 지냈으며, 동맹을 강화해 공산주의의 위협에 대항해야 한다는 '덜레스 외교노선'을 내세운 바 있다.

화 대변인은 또 "그의 행동은 비부감수(蚍蜉撼樹·왕개미가 나무를 흔들려는 것처럼 분수를 모르고 무모함)가 뭔지 보여준다"면서 "평화를 사랑하는 전 세계 모든 사람이 일어나 그가 세계에 더 큰 위협을 만드는 걸 막아야 할 때"라고 말했다.

중국은 미국의 중국 영사관 폐쇄 요구에 맞서 이날 쓰촨(四川)성 청두(成都) 주재 미국 총영사관의 설립과 운영 허가를 취소하는 방식으로 맞대응했다.
