EU '마스크 정상회의'…팔꿈치 인사·마스크 선물도

코로나19 속 첫 대면 회의…마스크 착용·거리두기

(브뤼셀=연합뉴스) 김정은 특파원 = 유럽연합(EU) 27개 회원국 정상들이 17일(현지시간) 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산 이후 처음으로 직접 만났다.

이날부터 18일까지 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 열리는 EU 정상회의를 위해 모인 것이다. 이들은 이 자리에서 코로나19 위기에 대응하기 위한 경제회복기금과 2021∼2027 EU 장기예산안 등을 논의한다.

특히 이번 회의는 코로나19가 계속되고 있는 가운데 열린 것이어서 어느 때보다 위생, 방역 조치가 강조됐고 이에 따라 이전 회의와는 다른 장면들이 포착됐다.

AFP 통신 등에 따르면 정상회의를 위해 모인 정상들은 모두 마스크를 쓴 채 평소 하던 악수나 포옹이 아닌 팔꿈치를 부딪치거나 고개를 끄덕이는 것으로 인사를 대신했다.

EU 행정부 수반 격인 우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 EU 집행위원장을 비롯한 일부 정상은 일반 약국에서 구매할 수 있는 마스크를 썼다.

자비에 베텔 룩셈부르크 총리 등 또 다른 정상들은 자국 국기나 휘장이 새겨진 주문 제작 마스크를 착용했다.

안토니우 코스타 포르투갈 총리는 마스크가 든 상자를 각국 정상에게 선물하기도 했다.

이날 정상들은 회의 장소인 유로파 빌딩에서 가장 큰 회의실에서 만났다.

이곳은 수용 규모가 330명 수준인 850㎡ 넓이의 회의실로, 보통 수십명의 정상이 대규모 대표단과 함께 참석하는 EU-아프리카 정상회의가 열릴 때 사용되는 곳이다.

이에 따라 정상들은 거리를 두고 앉을 수 있었다. 수행단도 정상별로 5명으로 제한됐다. 평소 정상회의 때는 수행단이 20명 이상 참석할 수 있다.

EU 정상회의에서 오랫동안 이어진 사교 의례의 일부는 바뀌지 않고 계속됐다.

에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령은 이날 66세 생일을 맞은 앙겔라 메르켈 독일 총리에게 와인을 선물했다. 오스트리아 측은 빈의 특산품인 초콜릿 케이크를, 보이코 보리소프 불가리아 총리는 장미 오일을 메르켈 총리에게 전달했다.
