(서울=연합뉴스) 이재영 기자 = 모든 미국인이 마스크를 쓴다면 미국 내에서 고삐가 풀린 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)을 두 달 내 통제할 수 있다는 보건당국 책임자 발언이 나왔다.

14일(현지시간) 로이터통신에 따르면 로버트 레드필드 질병통제예방센터(CDC) 국장은 이날 미국의학협회저널(JAMA)과의 웹 세미나에서 "모든 이에게 당장 마스크를 착용하게 할 수 있다면 4~8주 안에 코로나19를 통제할 수 있다"고 말했다.

레드필드 국장은 또 마스크 착용이 정치적 이슈가 된 데 대해 안타까움을 나타내면서 "대통령과 부통령이 (기존 같으면) 쉽게 마스크를 착용할 필요가 없다고 주장했을 수 있는 상황에서 마스크를 쓴 모습을 보게 돼 기쁘다"고 덧붙였다.

미국에선 마스크 착용이 '정치·사회적 논란거리'가 된 상황이다.

보건전문가들은 코로나19 확산을 막고자 마스크를 쓰라고 강력히 권고한다.

여기에 맞서 일각에서는 마스크를 착용하라고 요청하거나 강제하는 것이 '시민의 자유'를 훼손한다고 주장한다.

도널드 트럼프 대통령도 대중에게 마스크를 착용한 모습을 보이길 꺼려왔다.

그러나 지난 11일 메릴랜드주 월터 리드 국립 군 의료센터를 방문했을 때는 마스크를 쓰고 일정을 소화했다. CDC의 마스크 착용 권고가 나오고 100일 만에 공식 석상에서 마스크를 착용한 모습을 보인 것이었다.

국제통계사이트 월드오미터에 따르면 미국 코로나19 확진자는 총 354만5천여명으로 압도적인 세계 1위다. 최근 일일 신규 확진자가 7만명대에 달하는 등 확산세가 가팔라지면서 여러 주(州)가 속속 봉쇄조처를 다시 시행하고 있다.
