(서울=연합뉴스) 최평천 기자 = 박한기 합참의장과 로버트 에이브럼스 주한미군 사령관(유엔군 사령관)이 13일 백선엽 장군(예비역 육군 대장)의 빈소를 함께 찾아 조문했다.

박 의장과 에이브럼스 사령관은 이날 오후 2시 45분께 서울 송파구 서울아산병원 장례식장에 마련된 백 장군 빈소를 찾아 유가족을 위로했다.

에이브럼스 사령관은 방명록에 '유엔군사령부/주한미군을 대표해 백선엽 장군의 가족에게 깊은 애도를 표한다'고 적었다.

박 의장과 에이브럼스 사령관은 헌화와 묵념을 한 뒤 백 장군 영정을 향해 함께 경례했다.

에이브럼스 사령관은 유족에게 "백 장군은 한미동맹의 '심장'이자 '영혼'이었다. 그의 복무에 깊이 감사한다"며 "위대한 인물인 그에게 애도를 표한다"고 위로했다.

조문을 마친 박 의장은 취재진에게 "장군은 풍전등화의 대한민국을 구했고, 평양 입성을 선도한 지휘관이었다"며 "장군의 뜻을 이어받아 확고한 군사대비태세를 유지하겠다"고 말했다.

강경화 외교부 장관은 이날 오후 5시 45분께 조문하고 10분가량 유족과 대화를 나눴다.

강 장관은 '백 장군이 외교관 선배인데 한마디 해달라'는 취재진 질문에 아무런 답을 하지 않은 채 빈소를 떠났다.

조문을 마친 반기문 국가기후환경회의 위원장은 '백 장군을 국립대전현충원이 아닌 국립서울현충원에 안장해야 한다'는 일각의 주장에 대해 "가족도 백 장군도 (대전)현충원에 영면하는 것을 동의한 것으로 안다"며 "이런 문제로 국론이 분열되지 않았으면 좋겠다"고 말했다.

빈소가 마련된 지 사흘째인 이날 예비역·현역 군인뿐 아니라 정·재계 인사들의 조문도 이어졌다.

더불어민주당 박용진 의원, 미래통합당 정진석·장제원·엄태영 의원, 무소속 권성동 의원, 원유철 전 미래한국당 대표, 나경원 전 미래통합당 의원 등이 조문했다.

재계에서는 정의선 현대차그룹 수석부회장, 정몽준 아산재단 이사장, 허창수 전경련(전국경제인연합회) 회장 등이 조문했다.

김관진·이상희 전 국방부 장관, 김진호 재향군인회 회장, 남영신 육군 지상작전사령부 사령관, 김도균 육군 수도방위사령부 사령관, 이승도 해병대 사령관 등도 빈소를 찾았다. 서욱 육군참모총장은 전날에 이어 이날도 오전 일찍 빈소에 나와 조문객을 맞이했다.

미국에서도 백 장군에 대한 추모가 이어졌다.

월터 샤프, 존 틸럴리, 빈센트 브룩스 등 역대 한미연합사령관은 한미동맹재단을 통해 추모 메시지를 보냈다.

월터 샤프 전 연합사령관은 "백 장군은 한미동맹의 위대한 '롤모델'이었다"며 "백 장군의 헌신은 역사로 기억될 것이며 그의 유산은 다음 세대로 이어질 것"이라고 말했다.

빈센트 브룩스 전 사령관은 "백 장군의 한미동맹에 대한 영향을 측정하는 것은 불가능하다"고 애도했다.

미국 육군협회 회장인 카터 햄 예비역 미 육군 대장은 "백 장군은 전설적인 인물이며 한미동맹을 위한 한미 육군 간 관계 증진에 이바지한 분"이고 말했다.

미국 국가안보회의(NSC)는 공식 트위터 계정을 통해 "한국은 1950년대 공산주의의 침략을 격퇴하기 위해 모든 것을 바쳤던 백선엽과 다른 영웅들 덕분에 오늘날 번영한 민주공화국이 됐다"며 애도했다.

이날 많은 비가 내린 가운데 '나라지킴이운동본부' 등 시민단체가 광화문광장에 설치한 백 장군의 분향소에도 시민들의 발길이 이어졌다.
