청춘의 황홀경…영화 '마티아스와 막심'

(서울=연합뉴스) 한미희 기자 = 오랜 친구 사이인 마티아스(맷)와 막심(막스). 주말에 친구들과 모인 별장에서 영화학도인 친구 동생의 단편 영화에 출연하면서 둘은 진한 키스를 나누게 된다.

'나의 운명의 지침을 돌려놓고 뒷걸음쳐서 사라'진 '날카로운 첫 키스의 추억'(님의 침묵)처럼, 키스를 나눈 두 사람은 요동치는 감정에 휘말린다. 아픈 엄마를 두고 출국을 앞둔 막스는 담담해 보이지만, 맷은 그렇지 않다.

푸른색이 걷히지 않은 새벽, 홀로 차가운 호수를 헤엄치다 건너편까지 다녀온 맷은 "길을 잃었다"고 말한다.

막스를 피하고, 막스를 신경 쓰지 않는 척하며 그의 동선을 묻고, 혼자 밥을 먹다가도 막스와 비슷한 사람을 보고 놀라고, 많은 친구와 함께 하는 자리에서도 막스에게서 시선을 떼지 못하고, 남들은 의식하지 않는 일을 혼자만 신경 쓴다.

재채기처럼 감출 수 없다는 사랑이다. 하지만 그런 자신의 감정을 받아들이거나 인정하지 못하는 맷은 자신에게 강요하듯 부정하고, 위악을 부린다.

영화 '마티아스와 막심'을 연출한 그자비에 돌란(31)은 이 영화를 '우정에 관한 영화'라고 했지만, 맷과 막스의 우정은 사랑보다 뜨겁고 날카롭다.

핸드헬드로 두 사람을 따라가는 카메라는 그들처럼 흔들리다가, 맷의 시선을 따라 한곳에 고정되기도 한다. 다양한 장르의 음악이 요동치는 감정을 증폭시키고, 65㎜ 필름으로 촬영한 화면은 관객을 각자의 그때의 시절로 데려간다.

돌란은 이 영화를 고향인 퀘벡에서 실제 친구들과 함께 찍었다. '탐엣더팜'(2013) 이후 오랜만에 연출작에 출연한 돌란은 7년의 우정을 나눠 온 가브리엘 달메이다 프레이타스에게 맷 역할을 맡기고, 친구들의 설득에 직접 막스를 연기했다.

캐나다의 젊은 천재 감독으로 불리는 그는 2009년 반(semi) 자전적 영화 '아이 킬드 마이 마더'로 갓 스무 살에 칸 국제 영화제 감독주간에서 3관왕을 차지했다.

이후로도 '하트비트', '로렌스 애니웨이', '마미', '단지 세상의 끝' 등으로 수차례 칸에 초청받고 수상했다. 지난해 칸영화제 경쟁 부문에 올랐던 '마티아스와 막심'은 돌란의 제2막을 알리는 작품으로 평가받는다.

돌란 감독은 "내가 정말 하고 싶었던 이야기", "온전히 나 자신이 되어 만든 나와 가장 닮은 영화"라고 밝혔다.
